Adam Abu Harbid
Adam Zakaria Abu Harbid was born in Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza. His father, Zakaria, was a photojournalist who, in 2006, filmed the devastating footage that turned 12-year-old Huda Ghalia, orphaned in an Israeli naval strike, into a symbol of Gaza’s suffering. Abu Harbid worked for years at Al-Quds Today TV, where he ran the photography department until, longing to be behind a camera again, he began shooting live feeds for Fact Media.
During the genocide, Abu Harbid worked to document Israel’s crimes alongside Anas al-Sharif at Al Jazeera, Islam Badr at Al-Araby TV, and other prominent reporters in the field. “He was a model of courtesy, humility, and respect,” his colleague al-Sharif said of him. When their home in Beit Hanoun was destroyed, he and his family were displaced to al-Yarmouk, in western Gaza City. He kept filming through the displacement, the famine, and the bombardment.
Abu Harbid was martyred on July 24, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike targeting his family’s tent. He was 34 years old. He is survived by his wife, who was seriously injured in the attack, and his three children.

Peace be upon you. أنا الصحفية مَي أبو حسنين، I am journalist Mai Abu Hassaneen. I’m a Palestinian journalist from Gaza. I’ve worked for many local, Arab, and international media outlets. I have over a decade of experience. But everything we had experienced before this genocidal war يختلف تمامًا عما بعد السابع من أكتوبر. was completely different from what came after October 7.
I’d like to dedicate these next few minutes to talking عن الزميل آدم زكريا أبو هربيد. about my colleague Adam Zakaria Abu Harbid. We’ve unfortunately lost so many colleagues during this war, ونخسر المزيد. and we’re losing even more. Especially because journalists around the world have not moved an inch, رغم أنّ يعني تجمعنا مهنة الصحافة وقيمها، despite the journalistic values that connect us, والأهم تجمعنا الإنسانية. but more importantly, the humanity that connects us. But it’s important to remember our colleagues, وأن نعدد خصالهم، نعدد مواقفهم الإنسانية. to speak about their qualities and their humanity — . هم قبل أن يعني أن يكونوا صحفيين they were human beings before anything, before being journalists. يعني هو شخص هو إنسان، يعني يحب الحياة، they are a person who loved life.
Adam Abu Harbid was my colleague when I worked for Huna Al-Quds. I worked as a producer, and he would come out with me as a photographer. What stood out about Adam was his extraordinary passion for photography, his love for it. You could hear it in the way he talked about it, يعني بشكل نهم بشكل شغوف كبير، so eagerly and with so much passion. He always introduced himself as Adam Zakaria Abu Harbid. والده زكريا أبو هربيد، His father, Zakaria Abu Harbid, صاحب لقطة وفيديو تصوير الطفلة هدى غالية، took the famous video of the child Huda Ghalia. Who could forget Huda Ghalia, التي فقدت عائلتها أثناء التنزه على شاطئ بحر غزة، who lost her family while they were spending time at the beach in Gaza. Can you imagine, the man who captured this image ورّث حب الصحافة وحب التصوير وكل ما يتعلق بهذه المهنة لأبنائه، passed the love of journalism, photography, and everything to do with this profession onto his sons لآدم الذي احترف التصوير ولأخيه يحيى. Adam, who took up photography professionally, and Yahya. Adam was very much like his father and was deeply influenced by him. His father was his role model and the one who taught him photography. His father knew the smallest details of this profession. He would cradle the camera as if it were one of his own children. Though he was young, he was a journalism graduate. I think he was born in ’94, but I don’t want to get the facts wrong. But he was in his early 30s, around 30, 32, or 33...
Sadly, the occupation killed his dream by assassinating him in a tent, where he was with his family. His wife and children are still in the hospital, in critical condition. Our colleague Adam was killed after being directly targeted by occupation warplanes.
Adam, as we knew him, was incredibly passionate about photography, كان يحب التصوير، He loved photography. During this genocidal war, he worked for a local channel وأيضًا عمل لصالح قناة الجزيرة، and also for Al Jazeera. He accompanied the martyred journalist Anas al-Sharif during his coverage, وكان يستحق هذه المكانة، and he was worthy of that post. Because as a photographer, the son of a photographer, وارث المهنة بكل تفاصيلها بأدق التفاصيل، بالفنيات… he inherited the trade in all its details, technique and all. What stood out about Adam when I was — when we went out on assignments, لا شيء يشتته،لا شيء يلهيه عن التصوير was that nothing distracted him, nothing could pull his focus from photography. He was completely focused on the image. He loved photography. He had an eye for the frame, عنده أنه يلتقط أدق أدق التفاصيل لجماليات الصورة. for capturing the smallest details, the aesthetics of an image. He had an incredibly detailed professional knowledge of photography. Even I — I learned many of the terms, كثير من من تقنيات ومهنة التصوير اكتسبتها منه. the techniques, and the tricks of the trade from him. And, of course, he inherited them from his father. يعني شخص يعشق مهنته، He loved his profession. He absolutely loved his work. Indeed, the occupation stole his time وقرر القضاء على حلمه وعلى حياته وعلى شغفه، and destroyed his dreams, life, and passion. I’m certain that if the occupation had not ended his life, كان ينتظره الكثير من النجاحات، الكثير من الجوائز، he would have had so much success, so many awards, الكثير من المستقبل الباهر. and such a bright future.
He was a very humble person. We spent long hours working together for a local station. But he was very down to earth. He lived in Beit Hanoun while we were in Gaza City, and he was always on time. He would arrive before 7 in the morning. He was punctual and disciplined at work. He would come to photograph Gaza in the morning for a segment. He would prepare all the cables and the camera. He captured photos with his heart first, then his lens. Nothing brought him more joy than photography. He loved his job and was completely devoted to it. We would work for long hours, من السابعة صباحا ربما للثاني عشر ليلا. from 7 in the morning to around midnight. And for no more than 300 dollars a month. Sometimes there were financial crises, يعني ما يزيد عن الأربعين يوم، عن الشهرين، تتأخر الرواتب. and salaries would be delayed for over 40 days, sometimes as long as two months. لكننا وكان هو أيضا مستمر، But he kept working. We all did, and he did too.
We worked out of passion and love, more than for material gain. We believed in the Palestinian cause. We believed in what we were doing. But the occupation put an end to Adam Zakaria Abu Harbid’s life, وأكيد لآخرين من الصحفيين، للأسف. as it has to the lives of other journalists. Of course, what we want to communicate and the purpose of these recordings, سواء لآدم أو لغيره من الشهداء، whether for Adam or our other martyrs, is our message: إنه لا بد يعني البطولة، We have no choice but to be heroes. And justice means that neither Adam nor any other journalist should be killed. Justice means they get to live. Justice means that they get to keep carrying out their mission. Justice means they get to pursue their ambitions and continue their work. To remain in the arms of their families with their whole lives still ahead of them. We journalists are ordinary people. بنحب الحياة، We love life. مش أساطير، We are only human. But the occupation has to be stopped. Journalists around the world must help stop this slaughter: ويوقف هذه المجزرة بحقنا، وبحق كل الحجر والشجر والبشر في غزة. stop the massacres committed against us and against every tree, every stone, every human being in Gaza.
