Alhassan Matar
Alhassan Weam Mostafa Matar was from Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. He studied English Language and Literature at the Islamic University of Gaza. To his friend and classmate Abubaker Abed, Matar was “Habibi Alhassan,” a boisterous, polite extrovert who loved reading books about animals, watching astronomy documentaries, and telling stories about his family.
During the genocide, Matar hoped to complete his degree before studying business and leaving Gaza to work in Oman. He posted regularly on X, documenting Israel’s destruction of Gaza in real time. Matar’s final message on record: “What’s happening is not normal. Violent, non-stop fire belts. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.”
Matar was martyred on December 11, 2023, in an Israeli air raid that leveled his family home in Deir al-Balah. His father Weam, sister Tala, and grandmother were martyred alongside him. He was 21 years old.
Matar is survived by his brother, Kareem.

The bitter 18 months I lived through genocide in Gaza were full of pain, oppression, and suffering in every way. But the hardest moment of all was when I lost my dear friend Alhassan Matar.
Alhassan was always kind, smiling, and cheerful. Everyone loved him. He had a profound impact on me. I was always the kind of person who stayed at home and didn’t like going out. He didn't like that. He would tell me, “Come on, let's go out.” And I’d say, “No, I don’t want to go.” He didn't like that, so he would drag me out against my will, and he changed my personality a lot. Even now, when people see the journalist Abu Bakr Abed — the thoughtful, always-smiling Abu Bakr, with this incredible hope that amazes people — أكبر سبب إله—٩٠ في المئة من مصدر هذا الأمل والابتسام وكل حاجة—سببها الحسن مطر. 90% of that hope, that smile, all of it, comes from Alhassan Matar.
I’d known Alhassan since we were kids, but we became really close when we were at university together. I remember we would sometimes go watch matches together. He would support whichever team was playing against mine just to annoy me while I cheered for the other team. He was a great, great person. Great in every sense of the word.
The day he was killed, may God have mercy on him, the Matar family were targeted. I called my friend Abdulrahman Ismail. He told me there had been an attack on the Matar family on al-Bi'ah Street. I was sitting at my laptop writing an article. I jumped up; I was terrified. I ran out to find him, to see where he was and what had happened. I ran to the hospital and told my family. Panic broke out at home. Everyone who knew Alhassan loved him. I went to the hospital and searched among the bodies, asking, Is Alhassan Matar here? Alhassan Matar? I couldn't find him. I went inside and asked, Is Alhassan here? I went to the morgue refrigerators; there were three of them. I asked the man who shrouds and buries the dead, “Is AlHassan Matar here?” He told me to look in the refrigerators. At that moment, opening those refrigerators, I felt like I had to switch off my heart before I could do it. I opened the first one and started reading the names and looking at the faces. I didn't see him. I opened the second one — I didn’t see him there either. The third one — I didn't see him, and I didn’t find his name. But the bodies inside those refrigerators were badly damaged. I asked the doctors in the hospital. They searched the whole hospital and couldn't find him.
The next day, I returned to the hospital, asked in the tent for the dead, checked the refrigerators again — still nothing. I went to the reception clerk and asked him if Alhassan had been killed. He said, Wait a little, I'll check for you. He searched for his name and came back saying, Yes, Alhassan and Mustafa. I asked, Are you sure? He said, “Yes, he’s here. Alhassan and Mustafa Matar were martyred.” I sat in a corner of the hospital, and my heart shattered completely, like glass dropped on the floor. My heart completely shattered. Then I went home with tears in my eyes and told my family, and they started crying. وما كنا قادرين، We couldn't — ما كنا قادرين إننا نستوعب الصدمة. we couldn’t take in the shock. But thank God, Lord of all worlds.
I didn’t let my family see me crying. I would cry when I was alone. I always pray for him every day. I still pray for him to this day.
I don't know what to say. Since that day, something had been missing. Since that day, I’ve missed his laugh. I’ve missed his smile. Losing Alhassan hurt me. Losing him was like losing everything. I wish he could be beside me, always with me. He had dreams. He dreamed of going abroad, finishing his education, and building a life for himself. We had this dream that we'd each get married and live on the same street and always be together. But he's gone. And I promised him, and I promised myself, that wherever he is, he’ll be with me; wherever I am, I won't leave him behind. He will always be with me. He will always be with me.
Alhassan always encouraged me to write. We were always encouraging each other to speak English together. We used to watch cartoons together all the time. We were like kids even though we were university students. We loved getting to be children because in Gaza, there is no such thing as a childhood, even before this genocidal war.
Alhassan is gone, and a part of me went with him. Since that day, I still haven’t been able to take in what happened to Alhassan. But I'm sure he is in a better place. I remember the food he loved. Honestly, I have developed this fear, almost a phobia, of buying things Alhassan used to like. I wanted to buy a phone like his, but I was afraid. I can't even eat the foods he loved, like kabsa. I can't bring myself to eat them. There are so many things I can't bring myself to face because of Alhassan's death and martyrdom, may God have mercy on him.
I’ve dreamed about him two or three times since; he was surrounded by white, in a place of great bliss. He's always, always on my mind. I wish I could be with him in London or in Ireland — in Dublin, like I am now. I wish for it very badly. But thank God and praise be to God in all circumstances.
I’m sure Alhassan is in a better place, and I’m sure that, inshallah, he and I will meet again in paradise, and bi’ithnillah he will intercede for me. May God have mercy on him. May God have mercy on him. His memory will remain with me forever. And even if people think they recognize Abubaker, Abubaker is not the same Abubaker without Alhassan.
