Assem al‑Bursh
Assem Adly al-Bursh was a radio journalist who worked as a sound engineer at An-Najah Radio, engineer and commentator at Al-Rai Radio, and freelancer for local stations in Gaza.
Al-Bursh completed the construction of a recording studio at his home a few days before the genocide began, but the IOF almost immediately destroyed it with artillery shells. Still, he reported, helping to direct people away from areas under bombardment. Al-Bursh was dedicated to the profession, raising and mentoring the next generation of journalists in his role as a volunteer teacher of radio journalism and podcast production.
In a message to his colleagues at An-Najah Radio, he wrote: “The morale of the people of Gaza is high and we are here with them. They will not leave except for God or for victory.” The next day, November 21, 2023, al-Bursh was martyred in the al-Saftawi neighborhood, north of Gaza City by occupation snipers. He was 35 years old. Al-Bursh is survived by his wife and children.

May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. I am Amjad Bassam, a journalist from the Gaza Strip, الذي يتعرض لعدوان إسرائيلي غير عادل منذ ما يقرب عامين. which has been subject to unjust Israeli aggression for nearly two years. Like all Palestinians in Gaza, we journalists are suffering from hunger, oppression, hardship, والفقر والعوز وحتى الملاحقة والاستهداف الممنهج. poverty, deprivation, and even from systematic targeting and persecution. Many of my journalist friends were killed in cold blood by the occupation forces, وهي تعلم أنهم صحفيين. even though they knew they were journalists. They are protected under international law, ولكن للأسف إسرائيل قصفتهم استهدفتهم هم وعوائلهم في كثير من الأحيان. but unfortunately, Israel has bombed and targeted them, often along with their families.
Among my martyred friends is Assem Al-Bursh, من مخيم جباليا شمال القطاع. from Jabalia Camp in the northern Gaza Strip. He was a sound engineer working for a local radio station. He had big dreams of teaching sound and radio engineering around the world.
An occupation army sniper shot him as he was forcibly displaced from his home. He was martyred, leaving behind his wife and young daughter.
Another friend, Mohammed Qraiqea, was a dedicated, upstanding journalist. I knew him for twelve years. I worked with him at a number of local media outlets. Shortly before his martyrdom, he worked as a correspondent for Al Jazeera. Moments before the Al Jazeera tent inside the field hospital in Gaza was targeted, Mohammed Qraiqea had been spreading optimism on a livestream. He was subsequently killed, along with five other colleagues including fellow journalist Anas al-Sharif. They were all well-known and supposedly protected under international law. Even the hospital courtyard where the targeted journalists tent was located was also protected under international law.
But this is the occupation that has killed over 50,000 civilians — children, women, the elderly, journalists, and people from all walks of life. اسرائيل صراحة لا تكترث للقانون الدولي الإنساني، Israel blatantly disregards international humanitarian law, ولا يوجد رأي عام للأسف عالمي سواء كان رسمي أو شعبي ضاغط and unfortunately, there is no formal or popular pressure على اسرائيل بان توقف جرائمها المستمرة ومجازرها بحق الشعب الفلسطيني. on Israel to stop its ongoing crimes and slaughter of the Palestinian people. In fact, international pressure on Israel has failed يتم وقف العدوان الذي يستمر منذ أكثر من أو ما يقرب من عامين على التوالي. to halt this aggression, which has continued consecutively for more than two years. History has taught us that resistance is the right of any occupied nation. And I believe this is enshrined in the UN Charter. But today, unfortunately, even the Palestinian people who are living under occupation are criminalized.
I have personally suffered from this war: the occupation destroyed my home, shattered my memories, وحرم أطفالي الطعام والشراب والمكان الآمن. and deprived my children of food, water, and a safe place to live. I have been living in a tattered tent for several months. I am extremely exhausted. Imagine, I have lost about 35 kilograms بسبب الجوع وقلة حيلتي وعدم دخول الغذاء المناسب، وبسبب الحصار وحالة النزوح المتكررة. due to hunger, helplessness, and the lack of proper food, all caused by the blockade and repeated displacement. I cannot even find the most basic medical treatment. The reason is this insane war.
يكفي صراحة ذل، Enough humiliation, يكفي دمار، enough destruction, يكفي الاستمرار بحياة البؤس والشقاء. enough of this life of misery and suffering. I am filled with hope that Gaza's message reaches the free people of the world through you all. And I’m filled with hope that this war of extermination will end, وأن أستيقظ إن شاء الله على حياة أفضل مثل باقي شعوب العالم. and that, Inshallah, I will wake up to a better life, one just like the other people in the world.
This is my testimony as a journalist from Gaza. I hope it will reach people through you, Inshallah. I hope to find listening ears, وأن تشكل رأي عام ضاغط سواء في أمريكا أو في أوروبا أو في أي دولة في العالم. and that it will create pressure in public opinion, whether in America, Europe, or any country in the world.
This global public opinion must stop Israel, يوقف حرب الإبادة. stop these crimes, and end this genocidal war. Thank you.

As-salamu alaykum. I am Ahmad al-Arja, a Palestinian journalist from Gaza. Today, I’m speaking about two dear friends who were martyred during the beginning of the war: Assem al-Bursh and Mohammed al-Zaytouniya.
Talking about them isn’t easy for me, because I am not only speaking about colleagues بل عن إخوة من القلب وعن جزء من حياتي وذاكرتي. but about brothers, dear to my heart, who are part of my life and my memories.
I’ll begin with the martyr Assem al-Bursh. Assem was a young man in his early thirties, married with little children who brought love and hope into his life. He spoke so proudly about being self-made, about his humble beginnings and how he forged his own path. He began his career as an accountant at a bank, but his heart wasn’t in it. More than anything, he loved media and audio engineering. He clashed with his father when he left his secure job at the bank to start from scratch in media. A lot of people would have given up, but he didn’t. He insisted on pursuing his dream. I would watch him talk about sound engineering as though it was everything. He worked as a sound engineer at the radio station, وكان من أكثر المهندسين الذين أحببت أن أتعامل معهم. and he was one of the engineers I loved working with the most. He wasn’t just a technician pressing buttons and adjusting sound levels. He used to adore detail, chase the tone, search for purity. He added his personal touch, which made a difference for the listener.
I remember one situation, a moment I will never forget: There was a competition organized by the Government Media Office in honor of the martyr Shireen Abu Akleh. I came to him with an idea for a report, وقلت له: «عاصم أريد أن أشارك». and I told him, “Assem, I want to enter.” He put his hand on his chest and confidently replied, “I’m with you.” I wrote the script, and we recorded it together. Then he added his magical touch to the audio and montage. That day, I won the prize for best governmental report. I knew this was not just my doing; بل كان لعاصم الذي جعل من الكلمات لحنا ومن التقرير لوحة متكاملة. it was Assem who made the script into a melody and the report into a total work of art.
Assem was martyred by an occupation sniper’s bullet while he was trying to flee the North of the Strip. The day I received the news, I couldn’t believe it. How could someone with such spirit and creativity suddenly disappear? How are we supposed to continue to live on without hearing his laugh, or his professional input? We’ve lost one of the most outstanding sound engineers, وخسر أطفاله أبا عظيما. and his children have lost an extraordinary father.
As for the martyr Mohammed al-Zaytouniya, he had the opposite temperament, but he complemented Assem. Mohammed was the “life of the station,” as we liked to call him. He was lighthearted and always smiling, spreading joy wherever he went. We would spend hours together at the studio, especially during late-night broadcasts. Between every session, he’d keep us entertained with his captivating conversations. He would tell me about his childhood, the start of his sound engineering career, and funny incidents at work. He was never shy to speak about his home, his children, and his dreams.
He told me once, smiling confidently, “I’m going to live a long life and I’m going to become a millionaire.” We would laugh about that line a lot. But it remains etched in my memory, لأنّها كانت تكشف شيئا من أحلامه الكبيرة وروحه المرحة. because it revealed something about his big dreams and his cheerful soul. Mohammed was not merely a coworker. He was a friend who eased your pain, who made you appreciate your circumstances, no matter how stressful. He was a brilliant sound engineer. He had strong artistic intuition and the ability to change the simplest materials into enjoyable radio content. He knew how to make the radio host’s voice clearer, وكيف يوازن بين المؤثرات والحوارات، وكيف يخلق جوا إذاعيا حيّا. how to balance between sound effects and dialogue, and how to create a lively radio atmosphere.
But the occupation did not allow him the opportunity to live as long as he had dreamed. They bombed and killed him in his home while he was still in his thirties. The dream died with him, leaving his children without a father, تماما كما حدث مع أطفال عاصم. just like what happened with Assem’s children. The occupation wanted to kill sound and laughter together.
Today, as I go back over my memories of the two of them, I find myself looking at a double portrait: Assem, the serious professional, the lover of detail, ومحمد خفيف الظل الذي يحول التعب إلى ضحك. and Mohammed, the lighthearted one, turning exhaustion into laughter. كلاهما كان يجسد معنى الصحافة الفلسطينية: Both embodied Palestinian journalism: الإصرار والإبداع والإنسانية. persistence, creativity, and humanity. They were not simply sound engineers. They were part of Gaza’s journalistic story, جزءًا من روحنا الجماعية. part of our collective spirit. Their departure was not just a personal loss for my friends and me, بل كان خسارة للإعلام الفلسطيني كله. but a loss for Palestinian journalism as a whole. Despite all of this, their voices will remain in our memory, وستظلّ إنسانيتهما ومهنيتُهما شاهدتين على أنّ الاحتلال لا يقتل الحقيقة and their humanity and their professionalism will remain witnesses to the fact that the occupation does not kill the truth, حتى لو قتل الصحفيين. even when it kills the journalists.
