Gaza’s journalists remember their martyred colleagues

Bassam Hassouna

Biography

Bassam Faiq Hassouna was born in 1973. He worked for the Ministry of Culture office in Gaza; at the time of his death, he was serving as its general director. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA).

Hassouna was martyred by quadcopter fire on March 20, 2024, on the tenth day of Ramadan, as he and his family broke fast. His family was forced to evacuate the apartment building, which was demolished with Hassouna’s body still inside. His body was recovered from the rubble and buried days later. He was 51 years old.

Hassouna is survived by his wife and four children, three of whom — Amer, Dana, and Aya — eventually evacuated to Egypt. His eldest son, Mohammed, was barred from travel by the Occupation and remains in Gaza.

Greetings. I am the journalist Hanan al-Reefee. Today I want to speak about a colleague, a brother, a dear friend in journalism and in community work, الزميل الشهيد، رحمه الله، بسام حسونة. the late Bassam Hassouna, may God have mercy on him. He was 50 when he was martyred, on the tenth day of Ramadan, which fell around March 18, 2024.

Those days were unbearably hard. Famine was at its peak. The situation in Gaza City was extreme. There was no food. There was an incursion, and Israeli forces were destroying everything. They had reached Al-Shifa Hospital. And he was displaced along with his wife’s family, the al-Shurafas. They lived behind Al-Shifa. Bassam had been displaced with his wife's family and more than 100 of their relatives. Gunfire was constant. Small quadcopter drones fired on anything that moved. Some were eating animal feed. Even leaves from trees were out of reach, and when food could be found, prices were impossible. A sack of flour reached 3,000 shekels, more than $1,000. Families could not get food or water, and the governorates were cut off from one another.

Bassam stayed in Gaza. He was steadfast and refused to leave. Every day, he and his eldest son, Mohammed, went out to search for anything to eat. They walked long distances because there was no transport, under bullets and shells and missiles. He also cared for his wife, his ailing mother-in-law, and his own elderly mother.

He carried heavy responsibility and set an example for everyone around him. On that day, March 18, the tenth day of Ramadan, there was a raid on Al-Shifa Hospital. I am recording this now under the sound of Israeli aircraft fire. We remain at war. Gaza is living through a second famine. We are approaching two years of Israeli war and mass killing in the Strip.

To go back to the martyred journalist Bassam Hassouna. That day, the gunfire never stopped. واقتحام لمستشفى الشفاء، Troops stormed the hospital. There were many martyrs. Bulldozers crushed bodies and pushed them into mass graves inside the hospital grounds. There was firing on all the homes around Al-Shifa. At sunset, the family broke their fast with a cup of tea and a piece of bread since there was nothing else to eat. It was a brutal night. They tried to turn on a small heater for light, and when the quadcopter saw a glow in the apartment, it opened heavy fire. A bullet tore through Bassam's ear and exited his neck. He died instantly. He was holding his cup of tea. When it fell to the floor, they knew he had been hit. He had been standing, trying to light the heater.

His eldest son tried to drag him back inside, but they were firing on everyone, on everyone. After he was martyred, they managed to bring him in and wrap him in a blanket, keeping him in the same overcrowded room where the displaced were sheltering. It was awful. The drone speakers blared “evacuate, evacuate.” People ran from the building under fire. Many from Iqbal al-Shurafa’s family, Bassam's in-laws, were martyred. His wife’s sister and two of her brothers were martyred in the street.

The four-story building was then demolished on top of Bassam's body and those who remained inside. Days later, when the army withdrew from the hospital, the scale of the massacre there became clear. Bassam's body was recovered and taken to the cemetery. He was buried several days after his death. His index finger was raised in the shahada gesture, as if in final testimony. Subhanallah, the photograph of him in that state moved many of us.

I’m going to tell you about Bassam: the journalist, the martyr, the person. He was a brother, a brother not born of my mother, وكان بسام أخوي. but my brother nonetheless. He was loved by everyone. He served as director-general and representative of the Minister's Office at the Ministry of Culture in Gaza. As a journalist and an activist, he attended events, covered ceremonies and panels, wrote statements and news. He was widely admired. He was short in stature and would joke with us. When we asked, “Bassam, where are you?” He would laugh and say, “I left my other half at home.” He was well-spoken, educated, and at ease on screen. He appeared frequently in television interviews. You always found him at community events.

He studied journalism and media at the University of Gaza, then completed a master's degree in public relations and media there. We studied together. He was a steadfast champion of Palestinian prisoners. He would also speak about the plight of prisoners. His master's thesis asked how the media could truly serve prisoners held in Israeli jails. He was loved on a personal level, too. I used to say I was his sister not by blood but by bond.

A few days before he was martyred, with Ramadan starting — دائما بسام بكل رمضان كان متعوّد يجيبلي فانوس، زيي زي بناته. every Ramadan he would buy me a fanoos [Ramadan lantern], just like he did for his daughters. I had been displaced to the South, and he remained in Gaza City. He told me, “Hanan, I have not forgotten you. I bought your lantern, it is here waiting for you. Inshallah, we will meet soon. You are the best thing in the world.”

He encouraged me through my studies and difficulties. He always said, “I am proud of you. You are strong. You are generous.” He was my greatest support. My brother Bassam. I mean, I’ve never met anyone like him. Every year, he brought me a lantern, dates, chocolate, and on Eid, he treated me like his sisters. Our bond was familial.

When he was martyred, his brothers came to offer me condolences. I should have been the one consoling them, but they came to me. His son came as well because they knew what Bassam meant to me. We were always side-by-side, whether at cultural evenings, listening to music, attending festivals, or standing in solidarity vigils. On campus, he was loved. People called him “Dr. Bassam,” since he had been promised a university post. The two of us had prepared our papers to begin PhDs at Mansoura University. We applied, finished our master's degrees. We prepared everything and were just waiting to travel in September to finalize our enrollment. But this was God’s will and our destiny, and the war started in October. We lost Bassam, may God have mercy on his soul.

He had four children and loved them deeply. Amer, whom he affectionately called “Amour,” is now 15. He was born with an eye condition that required surgeries, which made him even more precious to his father. Amour was very close to him and always accompanied him. He’s the youngest, so he was spoiled. He loved Amour so, so much.

May God have mercy on your soul, Bassam. May you be forgiven, inshallah.

Dunna, whom he playfully called “Dana,” is now about 17. He has two sons, Mohammed, who is 25, and Amer, who is 15. Dana is 17. وآية تقريبا ٢٣، سنة Aya is around 22 or 23. He loved all of them. He cheered us all on and told younger colleagues in journalism, “You are my fellow journalists and I am proud of you.” He would tell everyone who was just starting out, “I am proud of you. You will make it. You will excel.” You planted a smile wherever you went. His words were kind. His ambitions were generous, always for the good of others. Mothers of prisoners loved him like a son. He would kiss their heads, comfort them, and strengthen their spirits when we went to the Red Cross to stand with the prisoners' families. He was remarkable.

I remember walking with him once. I am tall, and he was short. We were on the street, and he stepped up onto the curb while I stepped down into the gutter so that our heights would match. He laughed and said to me, “See, now we are the same height, because I left my other half at home.” We went to cultural fairs and exhibitions together. Before the war and his martyrdom, there was a book fair with the Arab League. He dedicated his master's thesis to the secretary-general, التي كانت تتحدث عن الأسرى ومعاناتهم، وكيف الإعلام الفلسطيني ينسى القضية الفلسطينية والأسرى بشكل عام. a study on prisoners and their suffering and on how Palestinian media often forgets their struggle.

Bassam used to attend book fairs in Egypt. He would travel to Ramallah when he could. He was an ambitious journalist, often on television, on Al Jazeera, Al-Aqsa, and Palestine TV. Broadcasters loved hosting him because he was confident and articulate, drawing on his work at the Ministry of Culture. He was active in the Palestine Liberation Organization and belonged to FIDA [Palestinian Democratic Union]. He was truly exceptional. Many people were devastated by his martyrdom. He left a mark in many people's lives, including mine. He always encouraged young people and told them, Keep going, keep trying, you are exceptional. Honestly, Bassam was one of a kind. Bassam, Abu Mohammed, was trustworthy and deserving of honour. I swear, Bassam, you were truly worthy of martyrdom. I swear to God, you were worthy. You were such an incredible person, Bassam. May God have mercy on you and make paradise your eternal home, ya Rab, ya Rab, ya Rab.

And that is Bassam Hassouna, a wonderful human being and journalist. May God have mercy on you, Bassam. You were worthy of martyrdom. And truly, you are not lost. You are with your Lord. Bassam's family later managed to leave for Egypt, لكن للأسف الاحتلال ما رضي يخلّي ابنه الكبير يطلع، فهو حاليًا في غزة هان محمد but the occupation did not allow his eldest son to cross. Mohammed remains in Gaza. He was forced to stay because he is the eldest son. So now Bassam has been martyred; the rest of the family has been pulled apart.

May God have mercy on the dead and on you, Bassam. You were so worthy of martyrdom. Ya Allah, when I returned to Gaza and found my old room from before I married, ولقيت الفانوس. I saw the lanterns he had given me. I have more than one fanoos from Bassam. Each time I hold one… May God have mercy on you, Bassam. You have a big, big, big, big place in my heart. Even though you are gone, you remain the bright half of my life. You are the brother my mother did not give birth to. Ya Allah, how my mother wept when she heard he had been martyred, والكل إجا يعزّيني، إخواني وأخواتي، لانهم عارفين قديش بسام بالنسبة إلي and everyone came to offer me condolences because they knew how much he meant to me. A brother and a dear friend. Inshallah, we will continue on the path he planned. I will finish my PhD, and I will dedicate my dissertation to you, because you deserve it. May God have mercy on you, Bassam. May you be forgiven and granted the highest place in heaven.
