Gaza’s journalists remember their martyred colleagues

Hussam al‑Masri

Biography

Hussam Atiya Abdurahman al-Masri was born in Khan Younis. He worked as a photojournalist for Palestine TV and a photojournalist and cameraman for Reuters. His colleagues remember him as patient and tireless in his work ethic, but equally devoted to his family, particularly his wife, who was living with cancer.

According to his colleague Amr Tabash, “al-Masri was the last to leave Nasser Hospital during the siege, and he was present in every alley of the camp, conveying the truth with sincerity and a free voice.” He was a tireless and positive colleague, and would always say “tomorrow will be better.”

Al-Masri was martyred in an Israeli attack on Nasser Medical Complex on August 25, 2025, while operating Reuters’ live broadcast. He was 49 years old. He is survived by his wife, Samaher, and their four children.

May God give you strength. This is Khaled Shaat, a Palestinian journalist from Khan Younis, Gaza Strip. When we come to talk about one of our friends, our fellow journalists… There are just so many of them — 250 fellow journalists who were directly and deliberately killed by the Israeli occupation. But let’s focus on those who were close to us, close to our hearts, whether through our work in the field, in our daily life, or otherwise. I’m going to speak about our colleague Hussam al-Masri, a Reuters photographer.

Hussam al-Masri was no ordinary person. He spent most of his time between his work, his own life, and caring for his family. His wife struggled with many health issues, and he was always concerned with making sure she could get treatment. He made sure to provide food for his family. He balanced his life at home and his life at work.

Hussam and I had a very, very, very close relationship. So close that, exactly three days before he was martyred, we were sitting together in the very place where he was later targeted. The staircase outside Nasser Hospital. There was a third colleague there with us. We were talking and chatting when Hussam gave me a piece of advice. He told me, “Khaled, I’ve given my wife all my financial information and my bank account details.” So I said to him, “What are you saying, man? Why did you do that?” “My time is getting close, Khaled,” he replied. I said, “Come on, man, may God give you strength.” He said, “I advise you to do the same thing I did,” and I drifted off, drifted off, drifted off… I looked at him and said, “What’s going on with you, Abu Mohammed? Why are you acting like this?” This was three days before he was assassinated. He convinced me to do the exact same thing. I actually did it. I contacted a relative and gave them my financial information: my bank account details, debts and outstanding payments, money people owed me, and so on.

Hussam al-Masri was hardly ever away from me for more than an hour. Hardly an hour would pass without Hussam al-Masri calling me or coming in person to the tent where I was staying at Nasser Hospital. He would come and sit with me. He was the kind of person who loved joking and laughing, always joking, always laughing. He always had a joke to tell, as we say. May God have mercy on our colleague Hussam. He has so many indescribable qualities. Hussam al-Masri was a kind, decent, and polite man, a man of great courtesy and refinement. He, along with all our colleagues, has never left our thoughts and never will — not even for a moment.

Hussam al-Masri’s greatest hope was to be able to get his wife, who suffered from health issues, out of Gaza. So that she could receive treatment. Hussam had managed to get her a medical referral form, which is used to refer patients for treatment and arrange their travel outside the Gaza Strip. But unfortunately, Hussam was martyred before he could travel with his wife or get her out of Gaza for treatment. This was his wish.

Hussam was always telling me about his home, which was destroyed by the occupation during its incursion into Khan Younis and its raid on Nasser Hospital. His house was close to Nasser Hospital. He always spoke to me about his house. He would tell me, “I built this house myself, Khaled, I furnished it, I spent all my money on it.” But the Israeli occupation, as we have always known it, destroys anything that might bring joy to Palestinians. Whether through direct airstrikes, targeted attacks, or other means.

That is why Hussam’s message and the message of Palestinian journalists has been clear since the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza. Their message is everyone’s message. They speak for every citizen living in the Gaza Strip: Stop this barbaric Israeli war on Gaza. Stop this torrent of blood in Gaza. Stop this ongoing genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed human beings, destroyed its buildings, and shattered every hope in Gaza. And so our message, and the message of our fellow journalists who were martyred, is the same message we carry: We are the voice of an ordinary people asking only for a decent life, يطلب بأمن واستقرار وأمان، for safety, stability, and security, وبأن يعود الناس إلى منازلهم، to return to their homes, ويعودوا إلى حياتهم اليومية التي تعوّدوا عليها. to return, ultimately, to the lives which they were once accustomed to. The Israeli occupation deliberately kills every beautiful soul in Gaza. The occupation also works to prevent Palestinian journalists from showing the world what’s happening, whether by targeting them directly or preventing them from reaching frontline areas. But Palestinian journalists have overcome all the Israelis’ attempts and got the story out to the world. Palestinian journalists have shown the world the famine, the slaughter, the bombardment, the genocide, the tens and hundreds of martyrs who are killed every day by these airstrikes and attacks.

If I were to say more about Hussam al-Masri — he was, as we say, always on the move, a real dynamo at work, 24 hours a day. If he wasn’t at Nasser Hospital, he’d be in the refugee camps among people in their tents. He would be in frontline areas, or wherever occupation forces were nearby, taking photos and documenting what was happening. After a bombing, you would find Hussam there the next day, or even just moments after the attack. You would always find Hussam at the scene. He would listen to people’s concerns, talk to them, and give them a sense of strength and hope.

I always remember Hussam coming to me asking, “Why is this going on for so long, Khaled? Please tell me, is it going to last much longer? Aren’t we ever going to get some rest?” In fact, Hussam wasn’t the only one asking that question, most people in the Gaza Strip were asking it. Their only hope is for this barbaric Israeli war on Gaza to end.

Hussam, may God have mercy on him, hoped the war would end so he could rebuild his home, be with his family and children, be with his wife and get her out of Gaza for treatment. Hussam was buying medications for his wife, and medicine here is extremely expensive. He would always tell me, “Khaled, our hospitals have no medicine,” because the occupation is enforcing the siege, closing all the borders and banning all medications from entering. So Hussam had to buy the medicine, even at extremely high prices. That was one of Hussam’s qualities, patience. I never once saw Hussam frown. I never once saw him angry. I never once saw him raise his voice at anyone. If he was angry, he kept it to himself. You would just look at him and smile, and straight away he would smile back and forget the worry, forget the problem, the anger, or whatever it was.

There will never again be anyone like Hussam in this world. Hussam’s body is no longer, but his spirit is still here among us. Hussam was an icon and one of the pioneers of journalism and media in Gaza; he established, documented, and conveyed so much and gave so much throughout his life. In the end, he paid with his life so that the message could get through, وها نحن، يعني، مكملين على نفس الطريق التي خطها حسام وخطها من قبله and here we are, continuing on the same path that Hussam charted, and that those before him had taken — مئتين وخمسين صحفي ارتقوا جراء هذه الحرب الاسرائيلية الهمجية على قطاع غزة. the 250 journalists martyred during this barbaric Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

We ask God Almighty for this war to end, for this genocide to end, for our people and families in Gaza to live in safety, stability, and peace. وبارك الله فيكم، May God bless you. Our warmest regards to you.
