Ibrahim Mohareb
Ibrahim Marwan Salem Mohareb was born in Gaza. He graduated from the University of Basra, Iraq with a degree in journalism and media. Mohareb returned home to work as a freelance photojournalist and producer of human interest stories. He worked as an editor and reporter for several news agencies, including The Palestinian Today News Channel (PDN) and the Al-Hadath newspaper. He was known by his colleagues as cheerful, helpful, and brimming with positive energy. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate called him one of its “most prominent and dedicated activists.”
During the genocide, Mohareb said, “Israel targets Palestinian journalists because we document IOF war crimes. Despite this, we have sacrificed our lives to show you images and stories of the genocide in the hope that you stop Israeli tyranny.” His last words on video were, “it’s getting close,” referring to an approaching occupation forces tank.
Mohareb was martyred in the Hamad city area, northwest of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, on August 18, 2024. The tank ambushed and deliberately fired upon him and a group of clearly identified journalists. He was 26 years old.

Peace be upon you. I’d like to start by introducing myself. I am journalist Rasha Ahmad from the Gaza Strip, specifically Khan Younis. I’m a freelance photojournalist.
I’m here today to tell you about the brave, noble journalist Ibrahim Mohareb. My loyal friend Ibrahim is one of the young journalists who chose a path filled with difficulty and danger, but he never backed down. He was a photojournalist who worked on a freelance basis with many news outlets. Most of the work he did, he did for free. For free. He delivered the voice of reality to the world from the heart of the scene. His presence was not fleeting. He was always at the Journalists Syndicate’s Media Solidarity Center in Khan Younis. He would capture moments before they disappeared. The camera was his only weapon, his tool and his voice. He cried out through the images he captured. He was known for his boldness. He was not afraid to enter dangerous areas to document, even though he knew this press vest would not protect him. But it was a message to the world: I am a journalist, not a fighter. He was devoted to his work and attentive to the smallest details. He focused on people’s struggles, on the truth, on everything. During the last war, he became even more active and was present at almost every major news event covered in Khan Younis. With every image he captured, he was sending messages to the world saying: I am here, in the Gaza Strip, my people are alive, and there are crimes that cannot continue to occur in silence. In short, Ibrahim was a brave, fearless journalist in the field. He chose to be the eye of the people, to show the world, through his camera lens, what they couldn’t say themselves.
But beyond everything, Ibrahim was human in every sense of the word. He was a modest young man, no more than 26 years old. He was loved by his friends, his colleagues, his neighborhood, and by everyone. He was known for his smile, which never left his face, despite the exhaustion he endured every day. Ibrahim was wounded. Ibrahim was incredibly loving to his family, especially to his late mother, may God have mercy on her. Even those who didn’t know him well described him as calm, kind, and well-mannered. Ibrahim was not just a journalist. He was a loyal friend, a good neighbor, and a devoted son. He had a dream to see the country free and to grow old in peace. In every image he captured, he saw hope for a different future. Even though daily life was full of danger, he never complained or backed down. On the contrary, he would always say, “This is my duty.” His humanity became clearer still after his martyrdom. Ibrahim was the voice that stirred people’s hearts. Ibrahim is not just a colleague. Ibrahim is a friend, a brother, a neighbor. Ibrahim is everything.
Ibrahim was by my side the day he was martyred. We had gone to the Journalists Syndicate’s Media Solidarity Center together that morning. He and I stayed at the Center all day. We laughed, ate, and drank. He was talking to me, telling me about the day before, when he had gone to Deir al-Balah راح يجيب جهاز تبخير أو كرسي متحرك لعيلة، نظام إنه عمل إنساني. to get a nebulizer or a wheelchair for a family, just as a way of lending a hand. A day before his martyrdom, we were having a conversation. Ibrahim started saying we should go cover what happened at Hamad [in Khan Younis]. I don’t know what I was feeling in that moment.
On August 18, I went with a group of journalists — including Salma, Ezzeddin, myself, and my colleague Ibrahim — رحنا نغطي توغل الاحتلال في مدينة حمد. to cover the occupation’s incursion into the neighborhood of Hamad. We were standing in an exposed area, wearing press vests and carrying cameras. But an Israeli tank opened fire, targeting us directly. We started running and running. Our colleague Salma was hit, but she just kept running and running. In the end it was just Ibrahim and I, and we kept running and running from the open fire. Sadly, the last shots were fired the moment we fell to the ground. Two rounds, both into Ibrahim. One round in his back, one in his leg. I threw myself to the ground. I couldn’t save Ibrahim. I tried to do the impossible, to hold on to him, to — ما قدرت نهائيا. I just couldn’t. I tried to get back on my feet again and run. The tank started firing on us directly. I don’t know how I got out of that place. By some miracle, I survived. As soon as I got out and felt I was out of danger, I notified the Journalists Syndicate, the Red Cross, the Red Crescent, the hospitals. “We have lost our colleague Ibrahim. He was hit. I don’t know: is he injured, or martyred?” Before he was retrieved the following day, he had been struck in his back and thigh.
Ibrahim isn’t just a journalist. Ibrahim is a human being. He was the voice of millions. He did not die… He did not die for nothing, بل من أجل أن لا تخمد كاميرات الحقيقة. but so that the lens of truth would not go blind. So that the world would hear the screams of the voiceless, of those who have no voice. He is the definition of a brave journalist; a kind human being; a loving father, a loving brother, a loving friend. And a loyal friend. Ibrahim will live on in every image, and in every word, and in every scene where the truth is recorded.
