Journalists as a collective
Since October 2023, when Israel barred international press from entering the Gaza Strip, Palestinian reporters, photographers, and other journalists have served as the primary witnesses to the ongoing genocide of their people. They have worked while starving, living in tents, burying their own family members, and wearing the press vests that marked them as targets. More than 260 have been killed, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. “The targeting of journalists is not a series of isolated incidents, but part of an aggression targeting the right to knowledge and the transmission of truth,” the head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Nasser Abu Bakr, said in July 2026. Yet the truth prevails: Every martyr gives birth to a new voice of Gaza. As the journalists themselves often say, the coverage continues.

During the war on Gaza, our work as journalists and our coverage have been completely transformed. We have faced extreme difficulties. We have faced threats. We have been disconnected from the outside world completely, من خلال محاربتنا وانقطاع الإنترنت وانقطاع الاتصالات. without any internet and phone signals. We have lived through tragic and difficult circumstances as journalists ونواجه صعوبة في تأدية الرسالة وإرسال التقارير and we are still facing difficulties in sending messages and sending reports وإرسال المواد بشكل عام. or sending any material in general.
Of course the Palestinian journalist is living in painful and harsh conditions like the rest of his people, between displacement and bombing and destruction. So many of our journalist colleagues have lost their families, فقدوا ذويهم. lost their family members, فقدوا أقاربهم. lost their relatives, فقدوا أصدقائهم وأحبابهم. lost their friends and loved ones. This put a lot of pressure on journalists during the war, خاصة أن الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لم يميز ما بين صحفي وما بين طفل، وما بين طبيب وما بين ممرض. especially because the Israeli occupation does not distinguish between journalists, children, doctors, nurses الجميع كان تحت دائرة الاستهدافات المتواصلة والمستمرة. —everyone is enduring constant and continuous targeting.
Particularly for those of us in North Gaza, my colleagues and I انقطعنا عن العالم الخارجي بالكامل بسبب انقطاع الإنترنت والاتصالات من الأيام الأولى للحرب. were cut off totally from the outside world from the beginning of the war. This was a huge obstacle for us. It was difficult to send reports and footage. We would travel to very dangerous areas in order to send our reports, to send our material, إرسال المادة من أجل الاستمرار في الصورة والاستمرار في الحدث. to continue our coverage and our documentation, and to share what was unfolding. We would have to go to the rooftops of buildings in order to find an internet signal or a phone signal through electronic SIMs ومن ثم إرسال التقرير أو المادة أو المشاهد التي نوثقها and thereby send the reports or content or the scenes that we documented, وبأقل جودة حتى نحاول أن نبثها للعالم ويشاهد العالم ما يحصل هنا في قطاع غزة. with the lowest quality, in order to broadcast it to the world and show the world what is happening here in the Gaza Strip. This is just one of the difficulties we encountered.
Also, the constant and continuous threats we faced from the Israeli occupation army. I was personally threatened by Israeli Occupation Forces, وأنني يجب علي أن أترك التغطية في شمال قطاع غزة وأتجه إلى الجنوب. and told that I needed to stop reporting from North Gaza and go to the South. But I refused their order, and I didn’t stop my coverage for one moment رغم التهديدات. despite the threats, رغم القصف. despite the bombing, رغم الحصار. despite the siege. Because I didn’t stop وبسبب عدم توقفي وبسبب الاستمرار في التغطية، and because of my continuous coverage, قام الاحتلال الإسرائيلي باستهداف بيتي the Israeli occupation targeted my home, بيتي وبيت عائلتي مما أدى إلى استشهاد والدي رحمه الله. and the home of my family that led to my father being martyred, may God have mercy on him. The circumstances were cruel and difficult and painful for me, ومؤلمة علي وعلينا جميعا. and painful for me and all of us, لكن هذا الأمر لم يزيدني إلا إصرار على مواصلة التغطية، but this only made me more determined to continue reporting. For we are the bearers of a cause before we are bearers of a message, in a sense. When we report on a situation or cover an event, فنحن كنا عندما ننقل الصورة وننقل الحدث هذه أصبحت أمانة في عنقنا. it becomes entrusted to us. It became a responsibility I carry on my shoulders personally, أن أستمر في نقل الصورة ونقل الحدث رغم المخاطر ورغم الصعوبات التي نواجهها. that I continue reporting despite the dangers and difficulties we face.
Every journalist in Gaza has suffered these circumstances. In the midst of our reporting we faced great difficulties: the targeting of the areas that we were reporting in, الاستهداف بالقرب منا. the targeting of areas close to us, استهدافنا بشكل مباشر. the direct targeting of our teams. Despite this, we — my colleagues and I in the North — didn’t stop our coverage. Of course it is no secret to anyone that my colleagues and I lived through very tragic and difficult circumstances. We slept in hospitals, shelters, نمنا في مراكز الإيواء. we slept in the streets نمنا في الشوارع وفي الطرقات. and on the roads. We slept inside vehicles and cars. We were displaced more than 20 times, ومن منطقة إلى أخرى. from one place to another, from one area to another حالنا كحال أبناء شعبنا. — our situation was the same as the rest of our people. We faced great difficulties. Of course, the situation in the North was especially difficult for journalists خاصة أنه لا يتوفر أي معدات لا يتوفر أي مستلزمات صحفية. because there were no materials available, no press supplies available. We had to make do with limited capabilities and with our simple phones in order to report the story, transmit the events, ونقل الحدث ونقل جرائم الاحتلال الإسرائيلي. and report on the crimes of the Israeli occupation.
The work of journalists in Gaza has been arduous, exhausting, and very difficult work that no one could endure for more than an hour. The work is continuous. We go without sleep for days as a result of the continuous bombing and shelling. Of course it is often difficult to get to the site of an incident for our coverage, because there are no vehicles or cars available; كنا نتنقل أيضا مشي على الأقدام من أجل الوصول إلى المكان المستهدف، من أجل الوصول إلى مكان الحدث. we travel by cart or on foot to reach places that are targeted.
The circumstances that we have lived through are circumstances that can’t be conveyed even in this moment. I want to say in this recording that our circumstances are still very cruel and hard. Me and my colleagues have lived through the famine in the North. Sometimes me and my colleagues go for days without finding a single meal. We move from place to another to try and find with great difficulty something that should be easy. Everything is extremely expensive in the North.
What I am talking about is just a small part of what we can record, ومما نستطيع قوله ومما نستطيع توثيقه. what we can say, what we can document. And yet the suffering is much greater, the suffering is difficult and tragic for us and our people. Yet despite this suffering, we are committed, نحن وجميع الزملاء الصحفيين أننا أن نبقى على ذات الطريق all of us journalists, to continue on this path أن نواصل المسير في نقل الصورة ونقل الرسالة، to continue reporting to the world, وهذا ما جعلنا مستمرين حتى هذه اللحظة. and this made us continue up until this moment. We are talking about more than 330 days of this war وما زالت عمليات القصف والمجازر مستمرة ومتواصلة. and the bombing and massacres are still constant and continuing.
And yet, despite all these difficulties and all these tragic circumstances إلا أننا ونحن وجميع الزملاء الصحفيين ما زلنا مستمرين يوميا وعلى مدار الساعة في نقل الصورة ونقل الحدث. all of us journalists are still continuing every day and every hour to report what is happening. This is what makes us continue, that this is our cause. It is the duty of the world to see and witness what we are documenting and what we are reporting. Maybe the world won’t act, ربما العالم لا ينصرنا، maybe the world won’t help us لكن ممكن أن يكون هناك دافع لوقف هذه الحرب. but there might be a motive to stop this war. Every time I document a massacre or event or bombing, I think that maybe through this bombing وهذه الصورة أن تقف الحرب وأن تنتهي هذه الحرب. or this image that the war could stop and this war would end. This drives us to continue in our coverage, until our last breath.
Of course, as I mentioned, the Israeli occupation was deliberately targeting journalists in a continuous way ونحن نتحدث عن قرابة 180 صحفيا تم استهدافهم في قطاع غزة. and we are now talking about close to 180 journalists that have been targeted in Gaza. It is clear that the Israeli occupation does not want images from Gaza to reach the world, لا يريد للكلمة أن تخرج، does not want the voice of Gaza to reach the world, لا يريد أن نوثق الجرائم التي يفعلها بأبناء شعبنا، it does not want us to document the crimes it is committing on our people, وهذا ما حصل مع الزميل العزيز مراسل الجزيرة إسماعيل الغول as what happened to our dear friend and colleague, the Al Jazeera correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul, بعد اغتياله من قبل جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي وهو يوثق ما حصل ويوثق ما يحصل من جرائم من قبل جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، after he was assassinated by the Israeli occupation as he was documenting what was happening and the crimes of the Israeli occupation فقام الاحتلال باستهدافه بشكل مباشر حتى لا يستمر إسماعيل في هذه التغطية. — so the Israeli occupation targeted him in a direct way so that Ismail could not continue his coverage. But what the occupation does not know is that after Ismail was martyred, نحن والزملاء الصحفيين زدنا إصرارا على مواصلة طريق إسماعيل وعلى مواصلة رسالة إسماعيل we, his journalist colleagues, are more determined to continue Ismail’s path and to convey Ismail’s message, رغم الظروف المأساوية ورغم التهديدات ورغم خطورة الأمر، despite the tragic circumstances and despite the threats and despite the danger of the situation. We could be targeted and bombed at any moment, لكن هذا حالنا كحال but our situation is the same as all of our people, جميع أبناء شعبنا كحال الرجال والأطفال والنساء الذين يستشهدوا في كل لحظة في قطاع غزة. the same as men, women, and children who are being martyred every moment in Gaza.

Hello. This is Yafa Abu Akar, a journalist from the Gaza Strip. Since the start of the war, from the very first day until this moment, I have worked as a reporter in the field, documenting the stories of our martyrs, ولقصص انه أبناؤنا ليسوا أرقام، بل هي قصص حقيقية. stories that ensure our people are remembered as human beings with full lives, not just numbers. They have mothers, they have children, and they have stories of their own. I have also written about fellow journalists, men and women who were martyred in the field. Over 50 members of my family have been martyred. Among them are my uncles, their wives, and my cousins. They were killed in direct attacks on their homes. As a journalist, I have felt distressed and demoralized as a result of the deliberate killing of my colleagues. At the beginning of the war, I fled to the South. I saw with my own eyes how journalists are targeted, how they are martyred. Over 239 Palestinian journalists have been killed. Nowhere in history have 239 journalists been killed in one place إلا في قطاع غزة. except in the Gaza Strip. What I mean is that journalism itself is a target. We are covering the genocide in Gaza with our blood, our writing, our voices. In the field, we only report the truth. A truth that many will not like, a truth that may kill many of us. This genocide, to be more precise, is an ethnic cleansing of the Gaza Strip.
My bond with the martyrs is strong. My four uncles, their children, their wives, and their loved ones. They are a piece of my heart. They were all loved. They all had dreams. They all had stories. They all had ambitions.
One of the hardest things I have been through is what happened to my uncle. He was targeted and killed with his entire family. The only survivor was a 9-year-old child. When the shock began to wear off, وجد نفسه بين رأس أبيه المقطوع، the child found himself lying between his father’s severed head, وأشلاء أمه الممزقة his mother’s dismembered body, ودماء أخواته داخل هذا المنزل. and the blood of his siblings. This is all that child saw. For over a year and seven months, he has been unable to look directly at anyone’s face. Because he awoke to find himself as the only survivor. His father’s head was severed. His mother’s remains and his siblings’ blood were scattered around him. For months, he’s been unable to look into our eyes or even in our direction. This is just one of many stories I’ve documented. I mean, imagine what it’s like for me to broadcast the news that members of my own family have been martyred, when their homes are targeted. How could you stay strong on air and simultaneously remain patient, try to hold back your tears? These are human beings, بشر إلهم قصص people with stories. It’s been traumatic, between my professional work and my humanitarian work.
I’ve been subjected to many things when it comes to our colleagues, يعني، آخر من تم استهدافهم ستة من زملائنا الصحفيين. most recently the targeting of six of our fellow journalists. Honestly, I’ve lost faith in this unjust world that watches our colleagues being killed, our children being killed. It watches our children being starved and humiliated, نساؤنا اللي بتلف على البيوت تعثر على شيء من جثامين أبنائها. our women walking through houses searching for their children’s remains.
It was a big shock when I went the morning after their tent was targeted. I went to cover the martyrdom of Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qraiqea, Mohammed al-Khalidi, Ibrahim [Zaher], and Mohammed Noufal. The sight of blood on the tent was extremely shocking. These are only journalists carrying their cameras and their voices. They are Gaza’s real voice. It was traumatizing to see the blood, to see the scene. I saw silence from Arabs and silence from journalists. In that moment, I almost lost my mind, to be honest. I tried to hold myself together and control my nerves while I walked through the place for the report, but I could not contain myself. My colleague Mohammed Qraiqea lost his father as a young child. And now history repeats itself: His son Zein and his three young children will also live without a father. They will live the same story as their father. Anas, too, who was always asking us to take care of his mother and children. Mohammed Mohammed al-Khalidi, the poor man, الصحفي اللي ما كان إله مكان يتواجد فيه، لينام فيه بعد تغطيته الإعلامية. the journalist who had no place to sleep after work. He was in the tent because he didn’t have one of his own. He could not sleep on the street, and so our colleague Mohammed al-Khalidi was struck there. Many stories still affect us. The moment our colleague Ahmed Mansour was targeted and burned inside a tent at Nasser Medical Complex. The whole world saw his body burn, but we, his colleagues, could not save him. These memories affect our work and our psyche, لكن نحن مصرين على انه نوصل الرسالة ونوصل صوتنا but we remain determined to deliver our message and our voice. If I, Yafa, stopped working after everything I lost, who would continue after me? If I, Yafa, considered all these martyrs as mere numbers— بكون في حسرة في قلبي لما بطلع عالهوا مباشرة وبحكي ١٠٠ شهيد I feel heartbreak anytime, live on air, I would say only, “100 martyrs,” المفترض أنا أذكر مين هؤلاء المئة شهيد I am supposed to say who those 100 martyrs were. أذكرهم بالاسم Mention them by name. I should name them and speak of the heart of every mother أو كل حسرة لزوجة هؤلاء الشهداء. or child they left behind and of every wife’s grief. Every martyr has a story. Each one is a tale in its own right. Every tale carries a lifetime’s worth of blood and tears.
There are many, many things that are difficult to talk about. As for myself, my family has been torn apart. My father, who is ill, is being treated in the West Bank, ويعالج نفسه لوحده، ويجري عمليات جراحية لوحده، دون مرافق undergoing surgeries alone without a caretaker, ودون السماح لأحد أن يتواجد معه. without being allowed any company. It breaks my heart. My mother, my brother, and my injured son left Gaza for Egypt a year and eight months ago. I have not been able to hold my 5-year-old son since then. He’s been growing up away from me for a year and eight months. My mother, who has cancer and desperately needs me by her side, الآن هي متواجدة في الشق الثاني، يعني بعيدة عني is also far away. Borders and checkpoints separate us along with tears and pain. There are so many tears we can speak of, whether about our martyrs or our other stories. If I wanted to speak about this, I’d speak about more than 60,000 martyrs. I would not just talk about one martyr or 50 martyrs or 100 martyrs. And that is without counting the missing and those who have been buried beneath their homes for more than two years. For over two years, those who were displaced from their homes that were targeted are still being bombed. We are talking about thousands of martyrs whose identities are unknown. They are underneath homes, their bodies decomposed, without receiving the dignity of a martyr’s funeral.
Let me talk about the hardest moment of my life. This is a moment I could never forget even if I lived another lifetime. When I went to the funeral of over 89 unidentified martyrs from Gaza, تسعة وثمانين... Eighty-nine martyrs… إسرائيل حاولت أن يتم دفنهم بطريقة بشعة. whom Israel tried to bury without recognition, قد بعثت حاوية، وفي هذه الحاوية أكثر من جثمان لشهدائنا. sent to us in a garbage container. There were over 89 martyrs in that container whose identities were unknown. They were only bones, only remains, only the smell of blood. When I was there and saw the blue bags, filled with blood, I wept endlessly. I could not contain myself.
How can martyrs be buried without their mothers? How can they be buried without their children? How do we not know them? How did we not preserve their dignity? To be honest, after this report, I fell into a deep depression. Is this our fate? We will end up buried in plastic bags? And Israel sends the bodies of our martyrs in garbage containers, refusing to allow these martyrs to be known? I could not contain myself when these martyrs were buried. For the first time, I smelled blood. I found the hair of little girls. وجدت أجسادا مقطعة، I found dismembered bodies, دماء جديدة، دماء قديمة، fresh and old blood, جثث، corpses, عظام، skeletal remains, رؤوس. and severed heads. All of this — it made me despise this cruel world and every word I had spoken about our people wanting to live. I hated the fact that for over a year and nine months, we had been speaking about our own genocide, our own murder, while the world stayed still and did not move. I felt that this world is despicable. I felt like our colleagues outside do not feel what Palestinian journalists feel. Just speaking about the massacres, reporting on the dismembered bodies and blood.
I mean, sometimes I want to refuse eating anything red. Even meat — I hate it because I’ve seen so many dismembered bodies and so much blood. Khalas, I have no energy left. I have no more comprehension. I have no more love for anything but Gaza. And these are my true feelings. I used to wish for a free world, a world that sees our children’s humanity, عالم يشعر كيف المرأة الفلسطينية تُهان الآن في الشوارع، a world that sees how Palestinian women are being humiliated in the streets, كيف نُهان داخل خيام في الصيف وفي الشتاء، كيف نجوع. how we are being humiliated, summer and winter, inside our tents, how we are starving. We are starving, too. Whenever I cannot find food for my children, I feel self-loathing because I am unable to feed them. We are a dignified people, and we have money, but there is nothing to buy. This starvation has killed our children and killed us, too. These are very painful feelings, especially for us as journalists.
A few days ago, I stood live on air and said that it does not shame me, و قلت أنه لا يعيبني، ولن أخجل أن أتحدث وأقول إني جائعة أيضا. and I will not be ashamed, to say that I, too, am hungry. As a journalist and mother in Gaza, I am hungry and my young children are hungry, too. I spoke on behalf of Gaza’s children and people. I spoke on behalf of my family and everyone in Gaza, وباسم كل أم في غزة. every mother in Gaza. We are being starved. We are being killed. We are being psychologically terrorized. We need whatever help we can get so we can continue on our path as journalists. I am a human being who is always standing at the morgue, ترى وداع الشهداء، seeing the martyrs laid to rest, ترى دماء أبنائهم، seeing the blood of their children, ترى وداع وصرخات الأطفال الصغار الشهداء. and hearing the cries of small children who have been laid to rest. All that within us is painful. Thank you to the free world. Thank you to whoever can spread our message. We are from the Gaza Strip. We love life, and we want our message to be heard. We want Palestine to be free, وليس بدماء أطفالنا، and not with our children’s blood, ولكن بدماء من ارتقوا قبلنا. but with the blood of those who were martyred before us. غزة حرة Gaza is free, و فلسطين حرة Palestine is free, ونحن أحرار. and we are free. We’ve been able to stand on our feet for 21 months, and until today, نحن فعلا أحرار we are truly free. نحن فعلا أحرار We are truly free. We’ve endured starvation and slaughter, وتحملنا النزوح، we’ve endured displacement, وتحملنا العذابات بأنواعها and we’ve endured many forms of torture. نحن أحرار We are free. Thank you.

Good morning. This is one of the problems we’re facing. We are not able to talk, not able to write, not able to take photographs. I mean, even something like — okay, let me send a voice note, just press the button and talk, and that’s it. But no, it’s not that easy. This requires mental effort, you have to gather your thoughts, but my mind is exhausted. We’re mentally worn out. We can’t think anymore. We can’t write anymore. We can’t speak anymore. This, in and of itself, is a sign that the war hasn’t been fully covered — this assault on Gaza, from October 7 until now. Since the assault on Gaza started on October 7, هناك الآلاف من القصص لم تروى بعد ولم تلتقط الصور thousands of stories remain untold and so many images remain uncaptured, لانه الحدث اللي بيصير أكبر من الصحفيين. simply because what is happening exceeds our capacity to report. Journalists are constantly pulled in different directions: Do you follow up on individual stories, or try to keep up with the breaking news? Their efforts simply can’t match the scale of this. And so they do what they think is enough, ولكن في الواقع هو مش كافي. but in reality, it isn’t.
And so we also ask foreign journalists: come. Or I mean, we push for it. We hope our institutions will pressure Israel to allow foreign journalists in. Not because Palestinian journalists aren’t competent — لا كفء و بيشتغل صح، no, they are competent, and their work is good, بس بدنا عدد. but we need numbers. Journalists here have done their part, we just need more of them. We need as many stories as possible to reach people, because this is a process of documenting history. What is happening now didn’t happen even during World War II. Can you imagine that World War II spanned six years, and 69 journalists were killed. But here, 238 journalists were killed in 22 months, وهناك، يعني، مقارنة بالمساحات، مقارنة بعدد السكان، مقارنة بالجيوش. and you need to account for differences in the land area, population, the armies. Here, there is only one army: the Israeli army. There is no opposing army to begin with, just small armed groups of humble resistance fighters. So, what is happening in Gaza is more brutal, harsher, and more difficult than what happened in World War II.
And what is unfolding in Gaza is even more difficult than what happened in the Holocaust, I mean, if we set aside the gas chambers. The descendants of the Holocaust are carrying out the same acts against the descendants of the Nakba.
I’m faced with this staggering number of journalists being killed by the occupation’s airstrikes, يقتلون بشكل مقصود أو بشكل عرضي. whether deliberately targeted or killed incidentally. Either way, we’re in danger.
And in some cases, it is entirely deliberate, by the occupation’s own admission. The most recent was the martyred journalist, Anas al-Sharif, Al Jazeera’s correspondent. There is something important here: What happened with Anas al-Sharif and his team reveals one facet of this war. The occupation now claims that Anas al-Sharif was a Hamas official, an operative. Let us assume for the sake of argument that the claim is true — هو تم نفيه، لكن دعنا نفترض انه صحيح، أوكي؟ it’s been refuted, but let’s pretend, okay? Fine. Why wasn’t Anas al-Sharif targeted when he was alone? Walking alone in the street? Or when he was driving? Or anywhere?
I don’t mean he should be targeted anywhere. But look at what this reveals about the war. ُThey waited until Anas was with a group. They killed all six journalists, even though they could have targeted Anas when he was alone. This is part of this war. Meaning, sometimes someone is an activist, مؤيد، a supporter, بس ماشي في الشارع يعني، or just walking down the street — حتى لو كان ناشط و عسكري يعني، ماشي في الشارع لوحده، I mean, even if he were a member and in the armed wing, if he were walking on the street alone, لوحده! by himself بيتركوه، ما يصيبوه، بخلوه مروح. they leave him be; they let him go. And then, once he goes back to where he’s staying — بيته أو الخيمة أو المدرسة whatever، يعني his home, a tent, or a school, whatever — بس يوصل البيت، يقصفوا البيت ويدمروا البيت ويقتلوا معه ٢٠، ٣٠، ٤٠. as soon as he gets there, they bomb the place and kill 20, 30, or 40 people along with him. This means they intend to kill the largest number of people. Even though they have precise, intelligent weapons, they have laser-guided weapons, they have quadcopters — هذه الدرونز اللي بيقدروا يستهدفوه لوحده. these drones, they can use to target someone individually. It’s true, they can. There are kamikaze drones, or something similar, that can hit someone individually. Yes, they can. But they aim to kill as many people as possible. This is one facet of the slaughter, and this is one of the dangers we face.
I attended the funeral of Anas al-Sharif and my other colleagues. I looked at the martyrs’ bodies in the cemetery, carried on people’s shoulders, and wondered: Who will be next? Me? Or someone else? Could I be killed? I could have very easily been in their place. I could have been in the place of any one of them. It very well could have been me, because every so often I go to Al-Shifa Hospital as a journalist, or another hospital, to report. It could have been me. And so I find myself wondering: When I die, will it be by a missile? I ask this sincerely, as though dying in this way was already a given.
Okay, then, should I quit this job or not? Why would I quit this job? If I leave, and another colleague leaves, and another leaves because of the danger, who will tell the story? If we leave this profession, where will we go? To another career? The entire population is targeted, journalists and non-journalists alike. Doctors have been killed, lawyers, women, workers, and children. Everyone is being targeted. Everyone — so even leaving this profession, which wouldn’t make sense, أيضا لن ينجو. it wouldn’t save you either.
While I was at the cemetery, the martyrs’ families were struggling to find a place to bury their children. There is no space left in the cemeteries. You have to carve out some space between two graves, أو يفتح قبر ويحط جثة جنب جثة. or open a grave and put a body next to another one. There is no space left in the cemeteries… If we die احنا الواحد صار يفكر في أولاده. we start worrying about what will happen to our children. They will spend their lives as orphans. They haven’t even finished school, and they will have to beg for help from charities and organizations that care for orphans. Nightmares. Nightmares. Nightmares.
As journalists in Gaza, we are not simply working; we are ploughing through sand. Because what does a journalist need to work and tell the story? They need equipment. None of these things are available. By equipment, I mean if your phone breaks, that’s it; there is no replacement. If your laptop breaks, there’s no replacement. Cables, headphones, anything. Internet networks have been destroyed. The signal is very weak and keeps cutting out, which makes our work harder. ... Electricity, there is no electricity to charge your laptop, or to charge…to charge what? The camera? I can’t even focus. I swear to God, I can’t even speak.
That’s why journalists go to hospitals: because the hospital has an electricity generator, a power generator. International NGOs." The generator obtains fuel from international NGOs. So journalists have had to go there to get electricity and internet access…and also to get accurate information. And on top of that, most of the energy we have for our work goes into looking for food, water, drinking water, firewood, and fuel, just the basics of our children’s daily lives.
What you see on television and hear on the radio represents only 10% of what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Some things are unspeakable. Another challenge is that there are stories that have not been told and must be told, "بس بدها verification" but they require verification, "verificationوال بده أدوات" وهذا غير متوفر حاليا. and verification requires tools that are currently unavailable. I’ve heard many accounts of rape. People have also told me about occupation soldiers raiding houses and stealing money and gold. Soldiers were competing with each other to loot houses. And sometimes, if they didn’t find anything, they would just destroy the house out of spite — انه: ليش، يعني، ما فيش شي؟ like, “Why was there nothing?” And then they would bulldoze the house or burn it. Thousands of houses were burned down. There is no crime that has not been committed, including rape. I can’t publish anything unless the person telling the story speaks and gives their name, age, and dates, but some have refused to speak. For social reasons, they don’t talk about it.
Back to the colleagues who were killed by the occupation — كل واحد فيهم له قصة. every single one of them has a story. And as I said earlier, their killing reflects the filthy face of war. For example, before they killed Anas al-Sharif, they destroyed his house, killed his father, and killed a number of his family members. They threatened Anas, then killed his father. I mean, his father’s killing was deliberate, in retaliation against journalists. They take revenge on us by killing our families, and we are helpless, man.
Mohammed Qraiqea had fled Shuja’iyya with his mother and family and was staying at Al-Shifa Hospital. He was his mother’s only child, by the way. He was so polite, very well-mannered, and very shy. They killed his mother in the hospital while she was displaced. Yes.
Mohammed Noufal — they killed his mother two months before his own martyrdom. She was killed in an airstrike on Gaza two months earlier. And before that, his brother Omar was killed while trying to help people, getting them water, getting them food. Mohammed lost his mother and his brother.
These are examples showing that not only journalists, but also their families, are targeted. At the beginning of the war, he lost his wife, his grandchildren, and a big part of his family. His mother, too, I think, I’m not sure.
There are many examples. Not just from Al Jazeera.
Mohammed Balousha published a report about Israeli soldiers cutting electricity to neonatal incubators. Afterward, a drone came down from the sky, killed him, and flew away. So this is clearly a war on journalists and on non-journalists, too. A war on our people as a whole, including journalists.
Am I afraid? Yes. I’m afraid.
As journalists, sometimes when we’re displaced and need to rent a house, an apartment, a room, a storage unit, anything, صاحب العقار يرضاش يأجرنا. the landlord refuses to rent to us. Why? “Because you are a journalist. You are targeted. So, I’m sorry, I can rent to anyone else — but not to journalists.” Because he knows journalists are targeted.
I am a safety trainer with the International Federation of Journalists. I train journalists on how to protect themselves, how to avoid danger, how to deal with danger, and so on... But I can tell you that all our safety skills and tools are no longer of any use, كلها اتدمرت. all of it has been rendered useless. This war has overwhelmed and exhausted every safety measure.
There are journalists who were killed while wearing press vests and helmets. And some were killed from a distance. So, the usual precautions no longer help. And even the safety gear no longer helps.
I even tell journalists: Don’t expose yourself too much on the streets. Go do your job and leave quickly. Don’t move too much. But that advice has become useless, because the killing can reach anyone, whether they’re in the street or wherever they’re staying. The last six journalists were martyred in places designated for journalists: the Al Jazeera tent and the [Palestinian] Journalists Syndicate tent where Mohammed al-Khalidi used to sleep. By the way, my colleague Mohammed al-Khalidi was my friend. He had been my student at university; I taught him media studies. He was very polite, very well-mannered, very independent. He had no ties to any Palestinian faction — وهذه ليست تهمة، بالمناسبة؛ في وجهة نظري الشخصية. and that shouldn’t be an accusation in the first place, in my opinion. He used to sleep in the tent because there was no room in the displacement shelters. His family would sleep in the shelter, and he would sleep in the tent. When I spoke to him, he told me, “I sleep in the tent, it’s more comfortable and spacious. Plus, sometimes at night, there are incidents that need to be reported on.” He was killed in the tent. So there is no safe place for any journalist in Gaza, not in the journalists’ tents, not at home, not in the displacement shelter, nor in the street. As I’m speaking to you now, I could be killed. I don’t know, I mean, a missile might fall on anyone, anywhere.
I’m speaking to you from the Al-Nasser neighborhood in Gaza, لانه في تهديد باجتياح غزة واحتلالها. and I’m talking while also thinking about where I should evacuate to, because there’s a threat of an invasion, of occupying Gaza. Occupation… Well, it’s already occupied, of course, but I mean going in and occupying it from within. The occupation is threatening an invasion.
So, I’m talking to you while thinking, where am I going to go? There’s nowhere to go. Where are my wife, my daughters, my sons, and I supposed to sleep? In the street? We need a bathroom; there is no bathroom. Bathrooms need water, and there is no water. All this anxiety drains energy and affects our performance as journalists.
There’s a lack of fuel, the occupation prevents fuel from entering, which has paralyzed our movement as journalists. When I had to go to Khan Younis, I spent four hours going and four hours returning, just to do an interview. And those four hours weren’t all spent in transport; most of the journey was on foot because transport is slow and the roads are badly damaged. Vehicles use an oil they call industrial diesel, which pollutes the environment. Anyway, a trip to Khan Younis that should have taken one hour took eight or even nine hours, بس عشان أعمل مقابلة في خان يونس. just for an interview. Khan Younis is 20 kilometers from Gaza [City], which should take around 20 minutes. 20 kilometers, I don’t know how long that is, yeah, 20 minutes. 20 minutes there and 20 minutes back, ten extra, 50 minutes. It took me about nine hours, just for an interview.
Things are harder, far harder than you can imagine, than anyone listening can imagine. It’s beyond description. The interview was with a woman whose child was missing. The child... The child who kissed the hand of a soldier from GHF, اللي بسموها «Gaza Humanitarian Foundation»، what they call “the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,” وهي «Gaza Hell Foundation» في نظري. but it’s the Gaza Hell Foundation, by the way. So the child is one of over 10,000 missing people. It’s not known whether they’re dead, alive, or under the rubble. So my six colleagues who were killed by the occupation are, in a way, fortunate. Their bodies were found, someone buried them, and there was space to bury them. So, they are “fortunate.” God knows whether, if we die, someone will bury us and whether there will be space — يدفنونا في مقبرة، ولا في الشارع، ولا في مقبرة جماعية؟ whether we will be buried in a cemetery, in the street, or in a mass grave. I don’t know... I really don’t know.

Peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you. What is happening to us here in Gaza, من إبادة جماعية حرقة الأخضر واليابس والحجر والشجر قبل أن تحرق الإنسان a genocide that has consumed everything in its path — land, stones, and trees — before human beings. This genocide is endorsed by the United States, Arab countries, and European countries, التي تتفق على غزة وعلى كل ما هو يتحرك هنا في القطاع. all of them aligned against Gaza and everything that moves in the Strip. The journalistic sector has not been spared from this genocide either. Women journalists have not been spared from these crimes, وهذه المحرقة وهذه المقتل التي يمارسها ويشنها جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي منذ قرابة العامين. the annihilation and slaughter that the Israeli occupation has been carrying out for nearly two years. We are still fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to us and carrying out the journalistic duty we took upon ourselves. We pledged to continue in this profession until we deliver our people's message to this world حتى وأن كان هذا العالم صامتا متخاذلا. even though this world has remained silent and failed us. Perhaps there are still some people trying to understand the reality, حتى تعرف ما هي الوجهة التي ستكون في طريقها لتأييد إذا كانت ستؤيد ما يحدث في غزة so that they can decide which side they will support, whether they will support what is happening in Gaza أم سترفض المقتلة والمذابح التي يشنها الاحتلال الإسرائيلي هنا في غزة. or reject the slaughter and massacre being carried out by the Israeli occupation here in Gaza.
But, speaking about us as journalists here in this voice message I'm sending, I’m Safinaz al-Louh, a Palestinian journalist and a reporter for Asseel and Al-Kawthar channels in the Gaza Strip. I’m sending this to everyone, not to anyone in particular. I’m addressing the whole world that has abandoned us and sold out Gaza and everyone in it. The world stayed silent and cowardly. It has truly failed us in the face of Israeli-American arrogance and terrorism inflicted on us during this genocide. We have always told the world that we want a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital أن فلسطين لازالت تحت هذا الاحتلال الإسرائيلي and that Palestine is still under Israeli occupation, وعلى الاحتلال الإسرائيلي أن ينهي احتلال الأراضي الفلسطينية حتى تكون دولة مستقلة. and that the Israeli occupation of Palestine must end so that Palestine can become an independent state. For years, for decades, the world kept making these same calls, وتغنى خلال القمم والمؤتمرات الدولية والعربية والإسلامية stated at summits and conferences throughout the international world and the Arab and Muslim worlds, أن فلسطين يجب أن تتحرر أن تكون هناك دولة فلسطينية calling for Palestine to be free and for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Yet it has completely backed down from all these resolutions. Everything in the media was nothing but ink on paper, something falsely championed before the world in front of the camera. They failed Gaza, failed Gaza's men, failed Gaza’s resistance. They failed every child in Gaza who cried out and pleaded with this world to stop the Israeli occupation’s holocaust and slaughter.
As Palestinian women journalists here, and I, as a Palestinian journalist myself — لازلت أقارع وأدق أجراس الموت التي يشنها الاحتلال الإسرائيلي بحقنا. I am still fighting and ringing the bells of death waged against us by the Israeli occupation. I am still out in the field doing everything I can to deliver the truth I owe. This is the truth by which we bring our people’s message to the world, وما يقترفه والاحتلال الإسرائيلي من جرائم وإرهاب إلى هذا المجتمع الدولي وهذا العالم المتخاذل. showing the crimes and terror committed by the Israeli occupation before the international community and this world that has failed us. Even though I am absolutely certain that no one hears us, ولا أحد يسمع صرخاتنا ولا أحد يسمع آهاتنا وألامنا وتعبنا وارهاقنا no one hears our screams, our wails, our pain, our exhaustion and fatigue — ولكنني لازلت مستمرة في التغطيات الميدانية لمن يقترف بحقنا هنا في غزة. I am still reporting from the ground on what is being done to us here in Gaza.
There are many fellow journalists whose names we say everyday, ولكن علينا أن ننصف الجميع كافة الزملاء والزميلات الصحفيات but we have to seek justice for everyone, for all our colleagues. Those who were martyred lived up to this responsibility. Through their voices, they were able to bring their message to a world that had turned away from our wounds, humiliation, and pain. But they were messengers of truth from Gaza to the world before they were martyred.
Even our colleagues who were wounded and left Gaza to get treatment lived up to this responsibility. As for those who stay, however, who are still alive and delivering this message وأنا من ضمنهم، لازلت أواصل هذه الرسالة الفلسطينية —I am one of them and I continue to deliver this Palestinian message. And I do everything I can to bring it to the attention of a world that has turned a blind eye to everything happening here in Gaza, من قتل الأبرياء من حرق من إبادة من محرقة من تبخر لجثامين الشهداء نتيجة الصواريخ التي يستخدمها الاحتلال الإسرائيلي برعاية أمريكية بحتة. from the murder of innocent people, to burning, to genocide, to holocaust, even the bodies of martyred journalists destroyed by missiles used by the Israeli occupation with full American backing. But we are still committed to fulfilling our duty to relay this truth. We will remain until our very last breath.
My brother Ahmad, may God rest his soul, was martyred. He was a reporter and cameraman for Al Jazeera. Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qraiqea were martyred. A number of our fellow women journalists who were trying to get this message out to the world were also martyred. Their voices were stifled before the eyes of this world, and even now the world has not lifted a finger. This message remains silenced until this very moment, after they were killed by the Israeli occupation's missiles and gunfires. But we have resolved to carry on our mission and our duty and continue on this path until the end, وحتى الرمق الأخير until our very last breath, وحتى أن تأتي إما الحرية أو يأتي القدر بأن نلتحق بها الزملاء. until either freedom comes or fate has us join our martyred colleagues.

Peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you. First, I’d like to introduce myself: I’m the photojournalist Mekael Bhar, I’m a freelance photographer, and I work for Falasteen Alyawm [Palestine Today].
Of course, as photographers in the Gaza Strip, غطّينا كثير حروب سابقة. we have covered many previous wars. But this war is different from all the others. من حيث الدمار، The scale of destruction, ومن حيث الإبادة الجماعية بحق البشر the genocide against people, والشجر والحجر، trees, stones, كل شيء. everything. I’ve been covering wars since 2008, right up to this one. I have never seen a war worse than this, من حيث الدمار، in terms of the scale of destruction, ومن حيث استهداف المدنيين بشكل خاص، وتدمير كل شيء، تاريخ غزة بشكل كامل، والاستهداف الكامل للمدنيين the destruction of everything, the deliberate targeting of civilians, and the destruction of Gaza’s history. Of course, as journalists we’re supposed to have special protection under international humanitarian law when we’re covering wars, كأي قانون دولي إنساني في أي دولة فيها حروب the same as in any country where there is war.
Now… as for the term «حرب على غزة»، “war on Gaza.” But of course, we’re civilians. This isn’t one state fighting another. The more accurate term is: «العدوان على غزة». “assault on Gaza.”
As Palestinian journalists, we face so many dangers while reporting in the field, wherever we are, everywhere, أو كل شبر في قطاع غزة. in every inch of the Gaza Strip. We’ve been displaced just like any other civilian. We’ve lived through this as journalists, and we’ve lived through it as civilians, all of it.
As a Palestinian journalist, I lost my home, and my siblings were detained, وتم ارتكاب جريمة بحق أخويا محمد إبهار، طبعا، اللي عنده متلازمة داون؛ and a crime was committed against my brother Mohammed Ibhar, who had Down syndrome. A dog belonging to the Israeli occupation army attacked him and bit his hand. He was left bleeding for a very long time, and the soldiers left him in the house and didn’t hand him over to my parents. He was martyred. Everyone knows his story.
We have lost so many friends and colleagues — يعني أعداد لا تُحصى. more than we can count. There are so, so many that I can barely remember all of their names. Without listing the names, we’ve lost so many friends and fellow journalists while reporting from the field. My colleagues and I have faced so many dangers. Whenever we go out to film an attack, wherever it happens, يتم استهدافنا بشكل مباشر، we’re directly targeted, رغم انه احنا طبعا، معنا الشارة الصحفية. even though of course we wear our press badges. Wherever we go, it’s clear we are working as journalists and as photographers, whether as correspondents or whatever else. We are directly targeted. We lost so many friends who were out covering everything that was happening. The occupation is trying to silence the truth, to erase the truth. They are trying to blind the eyes of the camera, the eyes of truth. But praise be to Allah, Lord of All Worlds, we will continue our coverage, حتى لو فقدنا آخر روح من أرواح الصحفيين. even if we lose every last one of us journalists.
Honestly, you know, if I tried to repay in words what my brothers and colleagues are owed, I couldn’t pay half what is due. They risked their lives. فقدوا أهاليهم، They lost their families, فقدوا بيوتهم، they lost their homes, فقدوا كل شيء they lost everything. I mean, whatever we say about them, words aren’t enough. Of course, we honor and commemorate their pure souls, نقف إجلالا وإكبارا لهؤلاء الشهداء، we stand in reverence before these martyrs. These journalist martyrs gave their lives to report on the occupation’s crimes and the genocide against civilians.
Honestly, I mean, I’ve photographed so many martyrs, صورت مجازر… so many massacres… If I tried to talk about these crimes, I couldn’t put them into words. I’ve covered a lot of previous wars. But the scale of the genocide, the psychological pressure, what all of this does to our morale… Honestly, in the face of all this, I would be lying if I said morale is high. لا، بالعكس No, quite the opposite, كثير تأثرنا بالشهداء، we’ve been deeply affected by the people who’ve been martyred, كثير تأثرنا بالناس اللي بيعانوا الجوع، by the people suffering from hunger, بيعانوا فقدان الأهل، losing family, بيعانوا فقدان المنازل، بيعيشوا في الخيم... losing their homes, living in tents…
As a journalist, I’ve lived through this myself, as have other journalists. We have been displaced from our homes. We have lived in tents. We left everything behind, and now most of us are in tents. You know, to live for one day in a tent, for even one day, صراحة ما بتقدر توصفه. it’s hard to put into words. Now imagine living like that for a long time, في عز الحر، وفي عز انه أنت ما تلاقي ميّ، ما تلاقي أكل، ما تلاقي أي شيء... in the height of the heat, with no water, no food, nothing... No matter how much we try to explain it, المعاناة على أرض الواقع تختلف عن الإعلام. the suffering on the ground is different from what you see in the media.
The media can show or cover certain scenes, لكن ما بتقدر تغطي كل شيء. but it can’t cover everything. The reality on the ground is, frankly, different from what you see in the media or on social media. I mean, anyone living this reality sees the horror on a much bigger scale.
My message to the world is: Stand with us, the Palestinian people, and advocate for us — يعني، الضغط أكثر على جيش الاحتلال وعلى الأطراف، طبعا، المتفاوضة، بأنهم ينهوا هاي الحالة. Honestly, people are exhausted. We cannot keep withstanding this, لانه المشاهد اللي بنشوفها كل يوم والمعاناة، صراحة، لا توصف. because what we see every day, the suffering, honestly, can’t be described. I mean, there is no people, anywhere in the world, who could remain steadfast and continue to withstand what we see every day.
Now, of course, I thank everyone who has stood with us, whether internationally or locally: أجانب، عرب، كل واحد ناصر القضية الفلسطينية. foreigners, Arabs, everyone who stands for the Palestinian cause. We thank them, hats off to them. And we tell them: Keep up the pressure on the occupation army until this situation ends. Inshallah, soon we’ll be done with this darkness, and rid of this war. ورغم كل شيء، Despite everything, طبعا، احنا صامدين، صابرين على هذه الأرض. we remain steadfast and keep enduring, here on this land. This is our fate. We have to face these challenges وانه نصمد قدر المستطاع. and stand as firm as we can.

Honestly, after the horrific crime against Al Jazeera's crew in Gaza, I find myself with a duty first and foremost to bear witness before speaking. When a journalist becomes a direct target and when the camera is struck just as homes are, speaking becomes difficult. But silence is more difficult. What is happening in the Gaza Strip before the eyes of the world, a world that, more often than not, settles for statements of condemnation and denunciation, reveals how fragile “international law” is for journalists. There is no real deterrent that can halt this killing machine, and yet we continue to deliver the truth to people under extremely difficult circumstances as the war enters its 22nd month. Over the course of these months, dozens of colleagues have been killed, injured, and detained. And with every colleague who is martyred, we are reminded that journalism here is not just a “profession,” but a moral covenant to tell people what is happening to them and what is being done to them without embellishment. The world sees us, yet so often it remains silent. Even so, most of us have never thought about stepping back because we know that without us, there is no one to bear witness. Among the witnesses we have lost, two martyred colleagues stand out: Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qraiqea. People knew them for their endurance, their calm in the midst of the storm, and their tireless perseverance.
I knew Anas before his name became known across the Arab world and internationally. He was a young man dedicated to documenting everyday life in Jabalia: social activities, local initiatives, and images from the margins that captured the life of the people. He would send me material for publication at Al-Quds Net News Agency. He was organized in his correspondence, clear in the information he provided, and precise in the headlines he suggested. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he took part in explanatory journalism, not to show off, but to provide useful information. He had a simple ethical compass: «ما الذي ينفع الناس الآن؟» “What helps people right now?” That spirit stayed with him as he moved from local reporting into the wider media landscape. When the war began on October 7, 2023, I was surprised to see him take center stage with Al Jazeera. He was a reporter who knew where to stand, when to speak, and what to capture. Anas exceeded expectations not by raising his voice, but by raising the standards of journalism. He focused his lens on people’s daily suffering, especially in northern Gaza, during periods of famine and when humanitarian aid was cut off. He wasn’t chasing “big headlines” so much as building stories from the details: a loaf of bread, a tent, a bag of flour, a mother searching for medicine. These are the details that shape what “war” means to the public and that make the reporting impossible to forget. I will never forget December 27, 2023, when my neighborhood in Beit Lahia was bombed. Anas was among the first to arrive, accompanying the Civil Defense crews and capturing scenes that said everything without exaggeration. He understood the ethical limits of what to capture, respecting people’s rights and the inviolability of pain. We may disagree about the policies of some channels or how they frame the news, but we all agree that Anas embodied the essence of journalism: accuracy, fairness, and being rooted in people’s lives. This compass is what made his presence so powerful and his absence so painful.
As for Mohammed Qraiqea, he had a different presence: calm and composed, measured in his words and image, daring but not sensationalizing in his documentation. He wasn’t looking for himself in the frame; he was looking for the truth within it. You could tell it was his work when you saw the balance between harshness and dignity, between the need to reveal and the victims’ right to have their pain treated with respect. Mohammed was the kind of journalist who reassured his team and the public simply with his presence: no fanfare, no showmanship, just professionalism that put the facts in their proper place.
When we list names, the faces of our loved ones crowd in: Hassan Eslayeh, Adam Abu Harbid, with his ever-present smile, Wael Dahdouh, who paid an unbearable price, and many others. Each name is a chapter from a single book entitled Witnesses to a Cruel Time. Their souls are in our care, and their stories are a responsibility we carry. We are neither heroes nor victims.
We work in service of the truth, and it is our duty to do that work well. But what is the point of words if not translated into action? We need three parallel tracks. First, genuine on-the-ground protection, including safe passages for journalists, protective equipment, and early warning and coordination mechanisms. Second, accurate and independent legal documentation that preserves evidence and prepares case files that can be submitted to international bodies for accountability. Third, institutional and professional support that ensures the continuity of newsrooms, safety and OSINT training, and the development of publishing protocols that do not compromise accuracy or human dignity.
Targeting journalists, whether by killing, detaining, or preventing them from doing their work, is fundamentally an attempt to erase the witness, disrupt the narrative, and impose a single version of events. Therefore, we adhere to the most basic principles of our profession: calling things by their names, attributing news to its sources, publicly correcting errors, and acknowledging what we don't know. We know that truth doesn’t always prevail quickly, but it can always be revived as long as there are those who believe in it and protect it. This is where institutions, unions, and professional networks come in: to make individual journalists less vulnerable to the war machine and to safeguard the public’s right to know.
To Anas and Mohammed’s comrades and their dear families, I say: We cannot heal your wounds, but we can keep their names alive in our daily work. We will tell the stories they began but did not finish. We will return to the places where they stood, not just to remember, but to continue our duty to bear witness. The notebook will remain open, the microphone ready, and the camera recording. This is the least we can do for those who have staked their lives on the truth.
May God have mercy on the martyrs of truth, grant patience and solace to their families, and grant our colleagues safety and steadfastness. We will continue on this path quietly, with great determination. Because journalism that does not defend people is not journalism, and because the truth, no matter how besieged, will always find its way to the people.

Do you know the novel Men in the Sun by Ghassan Kanafani? At the end, Abu al-Khaizuran is standing before the bodies of the three young men, and asks, “Why didn’t you knock on the sides of the tank?” They were scared to expose themselves by knocking on the tank, so they died.
There is a verse in Tamim al-Barghouti’s poem, My Soul as Ransom for Every Sorrowing Victor, where he says something like, أيدي أو كفوف الطيبين تسندها، “Gaza’s sky would collapse were it not for the hands of the good.” Then he says “Oh, people of Gaza, I swear, if it were not for your hands, there would be no sky left to shelter the world.”
To me, this is the role that journalists in Gaza are fulfilling today. They are knocking on the walls of the tank and pleading their case to those who are listening. And yet the world is not moving fast enough or doing nearly enough to stop this genocide. It is their hands upholding all the standards and ideals of humanity, وتحول العالم بشكل كامل إلى عالم مظلم، قاهر، بلطجي. keeping the world from collapsing into something completely dark, oppressive, and barbaric. A world that’s nothing but a jungle. هو already هيك. It already is.
But there’s still goodness here, in this small place, in the ground underneath us, يحارب الشر الموجود في كل العالم. in those who fight the evil spreading through the rest of the world. To me, those are the people and journalists of Gaza. To me, they are our martyrs: over 250 journalists. The most recent is Islam, who was martyred the day before yesterday. And before him, the six journalists at Al-Shifa Hospital — Anas, Mohammed, Abu Yahya, and the rest. And there were so many before them and so many after them.
To me, these individuals were daring enough to dream, to believe that we can make a difference. We are brave. We are the ones who have the courage to document with our cameras, to change the narrative, وتغيير الواقع الحالي، change our current conditions, ولفت الانتباه والأنظار لشعبنا المسلوب المقهور، and to draw attention to our people’s oppression. To change what is happening. You are dealing with the bravest people on the face of the earth. They are the ones spreading the truth to combat every false narrative in the world. They are fighting all the evil in the world from whatever concrete is left under their feet.
That’s how I see them, Gaza’s journalists. As in, I am incapable of seeing them as ordinary humans who do their jobs, then leave. Because they are not ordinary people who do their jobs, then leave. We sleep on the street. We sleep in tents. We die, and so do our families, who are also targeted. We live in schools. We live without water. We search for food and after that, water and shelter. We provide for the hungry children waiting for us at home.
We go live and speak in front of a camera, then we go and document the scene, then we post the photos on social media. Then we go live again. Then we sleep for two or three hours a night, inside a tent on the sidewalk, right by the hospital, هو السورس الوحيد للكهرباء عشان نشحن جوالاتنا، تلفوناتنا، وأغراضنا، وكاميراتنا. which is the only place that has electricity to charge our phones, cameras, and equipment. And the next morning, we wake up and do it all over again. For 680 days. That’s why I can’t see the people of Gaza as ordinary people and I can’t see the journalists of Gaza as people just doing their jobs.
