As-salamu alaykum. I am Ahmad al-Arja, a Palestinian journalist from Gaza. Today, I’m speaking about two dear friends who were martyred during the beginning of the war: Assem al-Bursh and Mohammed al-Zaytouniya.

Talking about them isn’t easy for me, because I am not only speaking about colleagues بل عن إخوة من القلب وعن جزء من حياتي وذاكرتي. but about brothers, dear to my heart, who are part of my life and my memories.

I’ll begin with the martyr Assem al-Bursh. Assem was a young man in his early thirties, married with little children who brought love and hope into his life. He spoke so proudly about being self-made, about his humble beginnings and how he forged his own path. He began his career as an accountant at a bank, but his heart wasn’t in it. More than anything, he loved media and audio engineering. He clashed with his father when he left his secure job at the bank to start from scratch in media. A lot of people would have given up, but he didn’t. He insisted on pursuing his dream. I would watch him talk about sound engineering as though it was everything. He worked as a sound engineer at the radio station, وكان من أكثر المهندسين الذين أحببت أن أتعامل معهم. and he was one of the engineers I loved working with the most. He wasn’t just a technician pressing buttons and adjusting sound levels. He used to adore detail, chase the tone, search for purity. He added his personal touch, which made a difference for the listener.

I remember one situation, a moment I will never forget: There was a competition organized by the Government Media Office in honor of the martyr Shireen Abu Akleh. I came to him with an idea for a report, وقلت له: «عاصم أريد أن أشارك». and I told him, “Assem, I want to enter.” He put his hand on his chest and confidently replied, “I’m with you.” I wrote the script, and we recorded it together. Then he added his magical touch to the audio and montage. That day, I won the prize for best governmental report. I knew this was not just my doing; بل كان لعاصم الذي جعل من الكلمات لحنا ومن التقرير لوحة متكاملة. it was Assem who made the script into a melody and the report into a total work of art.

Assem was martyred by an occupation sniper’s bullet while he was trying to flee the North of the Strip. The day I received the news, I couldn’t believe it. How could someone with such spirit and creativity suddenly disappear? How are we supposed to continue to live on without hearing his laugh, or his professional input? We’ve lost one of the most outstanding sound engineers, وخسر أطفاله أبا عظيما. and his children have lost an extraordinary father.

As for the martyr Mohammed al-Zaytouniya, he had the opposite temperament, but he complemented Assem. Mohammed was the “life of the station,” as we liked to call him. He was lighthearted and always smiling, spreading joy wherever he went. We would spend hours together at the studio, especially during late-night broadcasts. Between every session, he’d keep us entertained with his captivating conversations. He would tell me about his childhood, the start of his sound engineering career, and funny incidents at work. He was never shy to speak about his home, his children, and his dreams.

He told me once, smiling confidently, “I’m going to live a long life and I’m going to become a millionaire.” We would laugh about that line a lot. But it remains etched in my memory, لأنّها كانت تكشف شيئا من أحلامه الكبيرة وروحه المرحة. because it revealed something about his big dreams and his cheerful soul. Mohammed was not merely a coworker. He was a friend who eased your pain, who made you appreciate your circumstances, no matter how stressful. He was a brilliant sound engineer. He had strong artistic intuition and the ability to change the simplest materials into enjoyable radio content. He knew how to make the radio host’s voice clearer, وكيف يوازن بين المؤثرات والحوارات، وكيف يخلق جوا إذاعيا حيّا. how to balance between sound effects and dialogue, and how to create a lively radio atmosphere.

But the occupation did not allow him the opportunity to live as long as he had dreamed. They bombed and killed him in his home while he was still in his thirties. The dream died with him, leaving his children without a father, تماما كما حدث مع أطفال عاصم. just like what happened with Assem’s children. The occupation wanted to kill sound and laughter together.

Today, as I go back over my memories of the two of them, I find myself looking at a double portrait: Assem, the serious professional, the lover of detail, ومحمد خفيف الظل الذي يحول التعب إلى ضحك. and Mohammed, the lighthearted one, turning exhaustion into laughter. كلاهما كان يجسد معنى الصحافة الفلسطينية: Both embodied Palestinian journalism: الإصرار والإبداع والإنسانية. persistence, creativity, and humanity. They were not simply sound engineers. They were part of Gaza’s journalistic story, جزءًا من روحنا الجماعية. part of our collective spirit. Their departure was not just a personal loss for my friends and me, بل كان خسارة للإعلام الفلسطيني كله. but a loss for Palestinian journalism as a whole. Despite all of this, their voices will remain in our memory, وستظلّ إنسانيتهما ومهنيتُهما شاهدتين على أنّ الاحتلال لا يقتل الحقيقة and their humanity and their professionalism will remain witnesses to the fact that the occupation does not kill the truth, حتى لو قتل الصحفيين. even when it kills the journalists.
