Gaza’s journalists remember their martyred colleagues

Mohammed Wishah

Biography

Mohammed Samir Wishah was born in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza in 1986. Wishah’s journalism career spanned over 20 years: He began working for Al-Aqsa TV in 2006 and spent 2010 to 2024 with TRT World before becoming a correspondent for Al Jazeera Live. He was very close to his brother, fellow journalist Ahmed Wishah, with whom he formed a media duo.

Wishah was well-known throughout the central Gaza Strip. “After conducting interviews, [Mohammed] often followed up with the [interviewees] and tried to help them,” Momen Faiz, a Gaza-based Palestinian journalist, said of his former colleague.

On April 8, 2026, Wishah was martyred alongside another passenger in his car in Gaza City in a targeted Israeli air strike. He was 40 years old and is survived by his four children. His daughter, Sumaya, has spoken about her wishes to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a journalist.

Of course, I want to focus my talk on my colleague, journalist Mohammed Wishah, correspondent for Al Jazeera Live. Of course, he is one of the journalists I met often in the field, رغم أنه لم تربطني به علاقه قويه جدا جدا يعني. although I did not have a very, very strong relationship with him. But he was a very respectable, polite, and courteous journalist colleague في أي ميدان صحفي عمل ميداني كان موجود. in whatever field of journalistic work he was involved in. I recall that he always participated in the Great Marches of Return. We used to see him in the marches of return that started a few years ago, in 2018 and 2019, حينما كنا نتوجه الى المناطق القريبة من السياج الفاصل بين قطاع غزة والأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة عام ٤٨. when we were heading to the areas near the separation fence between the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948. We would always see him there moving among the citizens, يجري معهم المقابلات، يقوم بتغطية conducting interviews with them, الأحداث الميدانية من إصابات، من ارتقاء شهداء. covering events on the ground: injuries, and the martyrdom of people. He spared no effort in fulfilling his national duty towards his people when it came to his coverage. He was always present on the ground where there was work, اللي فيها بيئة خضراء يعني تتوفر فيها بيئة خضراء والأرضية خضراء عفوا أرضية خصبة للعمل الصحفي. in spaces where the ground was fertile for journalistic work.

Of course, Mohammed had a strong presence in front of the camera. Even if I didn't encounter him in the field, I would watch him on TV when I was in the office or at home. يعني حينما يطلع على قناة الجزيرة مباشر كان لديه القدرة الكاملة أنه يستعرض بكل سهولة طبيعة الأحداث الميدانية وبشكل مختصر ليضع المشاهد بصورة الأحداث الميدانية بشكل كامل. giving the viewer a complete picture of what was going on. Of course, this is in relation to one aspect of his professional life. For those who don't know him, Mohammed is a resident of Al-Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip. Across the media ecosystem, he maintained many strong relationships with journalists, سواء كانوا داخل الجزيرة أو في وسائل اعلامية اخرى. whether those inside Al Jazeera or in other media outlets. I encountered Mohammed in more than spaces throughout our work on the ground. His humility, his love for engaging with other journalists. He exchanged information, details, and experience with his colleagues على أساس انه يفيد الزملاء in order to help them, وأيضا كان هو يستفيد من هؤلاء. and, in turn, they helped him.

But, as you know, the war that has engulfed Gaza has not spared anyone. More than 260 journalists have been martyred. They are some of the victims of this brutal aggression. Which began in October 2023, and is still ongoing.

With the outbreak of the war, Mohammed was one of the people who participated in documenting the war ونقل الرواية الفلسطينية ونقل روايات الضحايا المدنيين and conveying the Palestinian narrative and the stories of civilian victims, والأطفال والنساء إلى العالم عبر قناة الجزيرة. children and women to the world through Al Jazeera channel. That is, when he was standing and holding the Al Jazeera microphone ويتنقل بين الميادين والمستشفيات كان يقدم معلومة للمشاهد. and moving between the squares and hospitals, he was providing information to the viewers. This is the role that he plays, like any other journalist, توثيق الانتهاكات والجرائم الإسرائيلية في قطاع غزة. in documenting Israeli violations and crimes in the Gaza Strip.

I've always been one of the people interested in Mohammed’s coverage, because he has a unique ability to convey information in a simple, وبمصداقية عالية أيضا. smooth and highly credible way. Unfortunately, it seems that because of the journalist’s work, his documentation of the Palestinian narrative, and his broadcasting of the Palestinian narrative, لم يعجب الاحتلال فقرر اغتياله وتصفيته مثله مثل انس الشريف ومحمد قريقع وغيره من مئات الصحفيين. the occupation did not like him, so it decided to assassinate and eliminate him, just like Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qraiqea, and hundreds of others. Hundreds of journalists and other fellow media workers وثقوا الجرائم الإسرائيلية ولم يسلموا من نيران الاحتلال خلال الحرب who documented Israeli crimes were not spared from the occupation’s fire during the war. They were subjected to direct and deliberate targeting, ما أدى الى استشهاد واصابة واستشهاد عدد كبير منهم وإصابة عدد آخر أيضا. which led to the martyrdom and injury of a large number.

Even after the ceasefire on October 10, 2025, لحتى الان ايضا الاستهداف مستمر ولم يتوقف. the targeting continues and has not stopped. Therefore, this requires documentation and media attention as well, من بقي من ممن نجا من الزملاء من هذه الحرب. from among our colleagues who have survived this war.

I would like to point out in this matter that Mohammed was martyred months after the announcement of the ceasefire agreement اللي تم في ١٠ أكتوبر ٢٠٢٥. that took place on October 10, 2025. He was in his office in a tent in front of al-Shifa Tower. He sat with Al Jazeera's staff and correspondents in Gaza. He left and headed to his home in the central Gaza Strip. While he was driving his car, he was targeted by a military drone. At least one missile was launched, resulting in his martyrdom. Mohammed's departure and martyrdom was a shock to his family, fans, and fellow journalists, نظرا لما كان يتمتع به يعني من محبة وحضور إعلامي بين زملائه وبين المواطنين أيضا given the media presence he commanded among his colleagues and among the citizens as well. He was well known to many in the Gaza Strip يحبونه ويحترمونه ويقدرونه دوره في يعني توثيق المعاناة التي يتعرض لها المواطنين في غزة. who loved him, respected him, and appreciated his role in documenting the suffering of the people of Gaza. That's one aspect من جانب اخر، طبعا محمد غياب وترك فراغ كبير بين زملائه – and on the other hand, of course, Mohammed's absence has left a huge void among his colleagues قد لا يعوضه احد. that no one can fill. Therefore, targeting him demonstrates the nature of the Israeli mentality in dealing with journalists. Anyone who contributes to documenting Israeli violations and crimes فبالتالي بصير عرضه لهاي الانتهاكات. will consequently become exposed to these violations.

Mohammed... I respected him so much. May God have mercy on him and grant him paradise, along with all our martyrs. He is one of the people I appreciate, من الناس اللي أنا كنت بتابعهم كثير طبعا واهتم الى تغطيتهم الإعلامية. one of the people I used to follow and observe their media coverage closely. But today, Mohammed is gone and there other journalists ممكن ان يكملوا هذه المسيرة الإعلامية في توثيق ما يتعرض له الشعب الفلسطيني من are going to continue this media journey in documenting what the Palestinian people are subjected to: حصار وانتهاكات و خروقات لوقف إطلاق النار واباده على مدار أكثر من سنتين. from siege, violations, breaches of the ceasefire, and extermination over more than two years.

I'm hoping that the targeting of journalists in this way doesn't happen, and that it doesn't go unnoticed. These are journalists, like any journalist working around the world. Like any journalist in the world, they must enjoy بحرية الحركة، بحرية التغطية الإعلامي، ة بحماية دولية أيضا في أوقات النزاعات. freedom of movement, freedom of media coverage, and international protection even during times of conflict. But unfortunately, the Palestinian journalists specifically in the Gaza Strip لا لا تنطبق عليه هذه القوانين والقواعد الدولية مطلقا في ظل وجود الاستهداف الإسرائيلي المتعمد لهم. are not subject to the same international laws and rules, in light of the deliberate Israeli targeting. Therefore, this requires an Arab and international stance towards the protection of Palestinian journalists from the crimes of the occupation.

It should be noted that there are also dozens of journalists, approximately 50 Palestinian journalists, who are in the occupation’s prisons, غالبيتهم من قطاع غزة صحفيين فلسطينيين. most of them from the Gaza Strip. This deliberate Israeli targeting of journalists cannot be tolerated. They are subjected to deliberate killing with planes, bombings and air raids. They are also sometimes arrested. Therefore, this matter is rejected by Palestinians, Arabs and internationally.

I want to conclude by also pointing out, او بالتاكيد على اهمية الدور الذي بذله محمد وشاح or rather emphasizing, the important role played by Mohammed Washah, مراسل قناة الجزيره مباشر في توثيق الإبادة على غزة. the correspondent of Al Jazeera Live channel, in documenting the genocide in Gaza. He continued his work, day and night, exposing the suffering of the citizens. He did not neglect his people. His memory lives on within us. Mohammed, and other colleagues who were killed by Israeli occupation forces. We will not forget them, and we as Palestinian journalists, أو أنا كصحفي فلسطيني طبعا أسير على هذا الدرب. or I as a Palestinian journalist, of course, will follow this path. The presence of these journalists remains among us despite their departure as Palestinian journalists. We will not forget Mohammed and other colleagues who استشهدوا في قصف واستهداف متعمد من الاحتلال الإسرائيلي خلال الحرب. were martyred in the bombing and deliberate targeting by the Israeli occupation during the war.
