Gaza’s journalists remember their martyred colleagues

Mohammed Yaghi

Biography

Mohammed Tishreen Sobhi Yaghi was an editor, photographer, and aspiring filmmaker. He worked for a number of international media outlets, including Al Jazeera. His friend and journalist Ghazi al-Aloul, in a eulogy for Yura’s “A Tribute to Colleagues Project,” wrote, “Mohammed was a funny and professional person and embraced life fully.”

Prior to the genocide, Yaghi produced a film on Gaza City’s Street Cinema Project, an initiative that screened movies on the street for children. In spite of Israeli forces’ regular escalations on Gaza, the project subsided children’s fears and fostered community.

He was 30 years old when martyred on February 23, 2024 in an attack on a house near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the town of Zawaida in Deir al-Balah, Gaza. Mohammed’s wife, Dania, and their daughter, Aylol, were also martyred. He is survived by his father.

Mohammed Tishreen Yaghi. Mohammed Tishreen was a photographer and cameraman, and he was working toward becoming a filmmaker. But it takes time to get there in this industry. He was my cousin, a wonderful guy with very good morals, too. He also danced Dabke, traditional Dabke.

One day, I was working on a project called the "Street Cinema Project." We screened movies for kids in the streets and taught them how to take care of themselves Like how to brush their teeth, يعني توعية اجتماعية بحيث انه الطفل يكون قادر يشارك في مجتمعه ويكون فعال في مجتمعه. social awareness, anything that would allow these kids to participate in society and be productive members of it. We were working on the project, وكان محمد متعاقد مع الشركة المانحة للمشروع انه يصور المشروع كله، يصور المشروع والمونتاج ويبعثلهم اياه. and Mohammed had a contract with the donor organization to film the entire thing— record it, edit it, and deliver it. "I want to come, film, and see what you're doing." "There's an event today, please don't be late." He said, "Okay, no problem."

I told him انه بحب الأطفال كان كثير. He loved kids a lot. I told him the kids were waiting for him to come photograph them. "I'm on my way. Inshallah, I'll be there soon." He arrived right on time and found the kids waiting, smiling. We were also painting the children's faces, and he was filming and enjoying the whole thing. Just before this event, there had been an escalation in Gaza by the occupation army, and the kids were a little scared. But when he saw the atmosphere was joyful and positive, he started filming gleefully. He had just been covering some difficult stories وكان الوضع شوي صعب في غزة. and the situation in Gaza was a bit tough. When he saw that the atmosphere at our event was positive, he immersed himself in filming. After he finished filming, he was really happy with how everything went. He turned to me and said: «والله احنا شعب يستاهل الحياة، غزة حلوة يا ابن العم "I swear to God, we are a people who deserve life. Gaza is beautiful, cousin. It has so many great things."

Afterwards, he told me, "All that's left is to interview you." I told him, "I'm not the kind of person for interviews, I work in sound. I've never even worn a mic." So, he said, "It would be an honor for me, as your cousin, to put a mic on you and interview you." But I told him, "No, I’m just not comfortable with anyone putting a mic on me.” He said, "Alright, I'll just go back to the office, download the footage, edit it, and let's see what we come up with." I said, "Okay." After about three or four days, بقول لي انه: «تعال تفرج». he called me and said, "Come see." I went to his office at the company, and I saw the things he had worked on and filmed. It was very nice. It was very... It showed the liveliness of the children very clearly. The games, the laughter, and everything we did. The film screening even surprised the children, because we aren’t used to these moments being captured so vividly.

So, I told him, "Alright, that's great, the whole thing looks really good." He said, "Okay, now I'm going to send it to the donors so they can watch the video and decide." He sent them the video. The next day they replied saying we must have an interview with Mohamed— that's me! He called me to say we have to do an interview, there's no way around it. “You need to talk about your project and your dream of having cinemas here. Even if this dream might not come true, you still have to say it. We need to talk about it, cousin."

I said, "Alright, fine, we'll talk." When he clipped the mic on me, he said, "This is the first time I feel like I'm doing something really good." » I asked him, "Why?" He replied, "Because it's the first time I've ever put a mic on a sound engineer. Normally, it's the sound engineer who puts the mic on others. This is the first time I felt I was doing something that truly mattered."

Our family was so proud of us because we were the only two working in journalism and media. It was like, "Here come the young journalists, film me,” and so on. Our family was really happy that we were going out, filming, reporting on and documenting people's struggles in Gaza, in a beautiful way. After we finished the interview, he told me, «خلاص أنا بركب المقابلة وبتيجي بتشوفها إن شاء الله». "Alright, I'll edit the interview, and then you can come see it, Inshallah." After two or three days, I went to watch the interview. He had cut it properly and placed my words in the right spots. What he had done added so much richness to the video-- or film-- he had made for the project.

And when he sent the film to the donor organization. They were really impressed with the work. Both of us were overjoyed, soaring with happiness, that we were two cousins who created this piece of work together. I don't know, really, if we were making an impact, or doing the right thing in Gaza... But unfortunately, the joy didn't last. We were supposed to continue the project and keep the screenings going. Sadly, there was an incursion just a week after we had filmed and submitted what we’d made. Mohammed got very distracted by people contacting him for work, and he got very busy, and I got busy with my own work while he was busy with his. One of the few times I saw him, he was displaced from Gaza City to the south of Gaza. He was with his relatives, our relatives. He told me, "I don't know... I have this feeling. For the first time, I feel like I'm floating, like everything is coming to an end. I keep smiling at everyone, laughing with everyone, and I am not sure what’s happening, but I feel something ominous.”

Then, exactly one week after I saw him, on February 22, 2024, Mohammed was on his way back from Al-Aqsa Hospital, where he had been covering events. He was leaving the hospital around sunset – maybe 6 or 7 o'clock, No, it was closer to the time of the evening prayer. Yes, yes, he was leaving his home in the evening, كان مروح من المستشفى. he was leaving the hospital. He was going home from the hospital at around 9:30. He had been covering events at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. He was just about to enter the house. The house was basically two stories, one on top of the other, and inside were about 70 displaced people. The family whose house it was had taken in 70 displaced people from the same family–they were all our relatives.

The house was brutally targeted. An F-16 brought down the two-story building, one floor after the other, killing everyone inside. Mohammed was among them. I received the news that the Yaghi family's house had been targeted. They told me, "It's your relatives — come to the hospital, we're pulling bodies out from under the rubble. . Come and see." So, I went. So I found out it was the house. And I identified Loay, Mohammed Fathi, Dr. Marwan, and then there was Mr. Rami— our relatives. I don't know. I asked them, "Where is Mohammed?" They stared back at me.

I told them, "My colleagues just told me Mohammed was here at the house." I told them, "Mohammed was on his way home, I saw him leaving.” We confirmed that he was going home, he was just entering the house… And Mohammed…Mohammed is still under the rubble. His wife and daughter, we buried them. I was the one who buried his daughter. But Mohammed, until now... It was nighttime... The shock was overwhelming. The next morning, ثاني يوم الصبح فرُحنا ندور عن ايش ضايل جثث تحت الأرض. we went out again to search for whatever bodies might still be under the rubble. Everyone was searching in one area, and I searched in another. I wanted to find Mohammed.

But Mohammed, unfortunately, we have not yet found him. What I did find was his camera. I found Mohammed's camera--there was nothing on it. Mohammed had been carrying it in his lap, but with the force of the airstrike, صارت الكاميرا في شقة ومحمد في شقة. the camera ended up in one place and Mohammed in another. We found the camera, which proved that Mohammed was home… because we found his camera. We found the tool, but not the witness.

May God have mercy on Mohammed. And may God have mercy on all the martyrs.
