Gaza’s journalists remember their martyred colleagues

Yahya Sobeih

Biography

Yahya Munir As'ad Sobeih was born in Gaza City. He began working as an independent photojournalist, editor, and reporter in 2014. He contributed to local online outlets Sabaq 24 News Agency and Palestine Post, as well as The Phoenix of Gaza VR project. “Yahya was one of the few remaining journalists in Gaza, always close to the people,” wrote Hani Almadhoun, co-founder of the Gaza Soup Kitchen.

During the genocide, Sobeih documented his people’s suffering—residents digging through rubble; closed bakeries marking the occupation’s use of forced starvation as a weapon of war—while also losing loved ones of his own.

Sobeih was martyred by an Israeli airstrike in Al-Rimal, Gaza City, on May 7, 2025, alongside his cousin, best friend, and brother-in-law. He was 32 years old. He is survived by his wife Amal, his sons Kenan and Baraa, and his daughter Sana, who was born just five hours before he was murdered.

I finally feel ready to speak. To speak about journalism and about Anas al-Sharif and our colleagues and friends who were martyred. May God have mercy on them. My way of expressing myself might fail me. Grief can often make it impossible to share everything our hearts carry. But I will try. I’m going to speak as openly as I can. I can’t do anything about the sound of the drones, of course. You might hear noise from around me, because we have been displaced and there’s chaos around us all the time, people everywhere. I don’t know what to say.

Anyway, let me start with what I’ve been wanting to say. Why are institutions completely unable to protect journalists? Why? They employ these journalists, but why can’t they protect them? Our voices are being killed. But we consistently get new generations of voices, new journalists. They do not just emerge in times of war, when you become familiar with their names. They are journalists we have known for a long time. But why do they keep killing them? How? How will the world hear our voices? How will the outside world understand everything happening in Gaza?

You or others might not know what life here looks like. Life here is 180 degrees different from what you hear on the news. What you hear on the news is only 1% of what is actually happening. For example, I read an article yesterday for the first time about something I didn’t know about. No one is aware of it because we don’t hear the news, so I just found out about it yesterday. In Netzarim, in the South, a man fell in a well, in the aid distribution area — I don’t know where they were going — he fell in the well and fainted. His friends kept searching, calling his name until eventually he regained consciousness. They struggled to pull him out, tying electric cables together over and over until the rope was long enough to pull him out. He said there were body parts down there, corpses — the hard bones of old corpses, and the soft flesh from newer ones. I was shocked when I found out yesterday. I mean, I live in the same city and didn’t know this, so imagine the case with the outside world? The role of journalism is vital for communicating the realities we are living.

I am still shaken to this day by Anas al-Sharif’s martyrdom, and the crew that was with him. I cannot get over it. It’s impossible. We really used to see him on screen every single day. His voice comforted us with the possibility that the outside world might listen to us through him and his colleagues. But after his martyrdom, the world became somehow even darker than it already was. My family was all gathered together. We’re all displaced and living under the same roof as my uncles and aunts. We were sitting in the living room and my sister suddenly said, Anas al-Sharif is a martyr. I froze up and had no idea what to say. I felt like the world became even darker. I thought to myself, What is going to happen to us now? Right away that thought came to me, that the occupation would do something terrible, commit a massacre, after the martyrdom of Anas and his colleagues, because that’s what the occupation does.

There were massive massacres after Ismail al-Ghoul was martyred. With every journalist’s martyrdom comes a disaster, and this is something we are used to. Of course, after Anas al-Sharif’s martyrdom, we found out about the decision to occupy Gaza. The martyrdom of Anas was itself a form of occupation, and now we are awaiting another one.

God forbid this occupation actually happens, because we will be living in even deeper misery than what we are currently living in. I don’t know what would happen if, God forbid, Gaza is occupied. Displacement to the South. I cannot imagine more displacement, to see our home for the last time, see our beach for the last time. We’re here in Gaza and we still miss it, so imagine if we are displaced even further, God forbid. All I can say is that there has to be some sort of solution. At that point, it’s over. It’s really over. Things are too bleak, and the occupation continues to kill journalists and our voices. It feels as though we are in a jungle, far away and isolated from the entire world. No one is aware of what’s happening to us, and we have no idea what’s going on with the world. You know, I’m frightened by the possibility of leaving Gaza — if inshallah I am able to travel — because I think leaving Gaza is when the real trauma will begin. I feel, my God, that I was living in a black world, a dark world, a frightening world, a world full of blood and body parts. I’ll look outside and see the sun, signs of life, cars driving around. I’ll see people going on walks, no sound of bombardment, no sound of — ما في صوت موت، مافي خوف. no sound of death, no fear. I’ll wonder ya Allah, what are we living through, what now?

I started speaking about journalism, but I find myself speaking about something else. I don’t know, this is what’s in my heart. Israel threatened Anas with assassination. They told him, “We know where your family lives, either you quit journalism or we will murder them all.” Anas responded by telling his wife and family to leave the house, and he insisted on continuing his coverage. We all felt like Anas considered us his responsibility, that we were entrusted to him. Our voice is a responsibility; we’ve been entrusted with showing these crimes to the world. The threats continued, and eventually Anas al-Sharif was martyred. The world spoke about him for a few days, but they’ll eventually forget him just as they forgot Ismail al-Ghoul, Samer Abu Daqqa, and others like them. There was another massacre today too, and several journalists were martyred. But the world continues to be silent.

How has the world’s conscience died? There is no longer any humanity. I’m going to speak my mind and say what’s in my heart.

I feel like the people living in the West, unlike their governments, have stood with us more than the entire Arab world has. I keep thinking, ya Allah, what is going on? Where is everyone? Why don’t you move? We are people, we share your blood, we are Arabs. Where are you? We need you. We are extremely exhausted. I feel like we are crying alone. We are crying by ourselves, bleeding alone. No one is listening to us. We are so tired.

The sun is indeed still shining, but I wish that I could feel the sunshine. I wish I could feel the breeze. I dream of the air we breathed before the war, of life before the war. There is this breeze in the air that’s different, you feel like there’s something, something strange. Sometimes, I stand by the window waiting for the breeze that used to come to us before the war. It makes me yearn for the days before the war. Whenever I’d get this feeling, I’d tell myself that the war will end soon, but I’ve been saying this since the very beginning and the war is still ongoing. Since the start of this war, I keep wondering if it’s the beginning of the end. Is this really the end of the war? But no, it seems it’s only the beginning. I wish I could know when this war will end, when the bloodshed will end.

I want to tell you one more story about Yahya Sobeih, may God have mercy on him. Yahya Sobeih was a journalist who had waited his whole life for a daughter. His whole life. He has two sons, Kenan and Baraa. Kenan and Baraa were waiting for their new sister Sana to arrive. Yahya waited for the day his wife would give birth in May. They went to the hospital and prepared her clothes, prepared everything for her birth. When Sana was born, Yahya cradled her and whispered the Adhan in her ear. He went with his friends to get her some milk. But Yahya Sobeih never came back, and he never saw Sana again, because he was martyred.

We met with his wife and she wept while she told us the story of Sana’s birth. Her little children watched her as tears streamed down her face. It wasn’t easy for me to see her children watching her as she cried and spoke about her husband and how he won’t get to see his daughter grow up. Of course, Yahya’s story is one of many, many stories. Many, many stories.
